Friday night we all went out to Locale for dinner to celebrate Ilana’s birthday. I ordered the linguine with seafood in a white wine sauce… delicious, as usual. I ate about 2/3 and brought the rest home for leftovers.
We shared a slice of tiramisu after the birthday girl blew out her candles…
… then went to see an 11:40 showing of Avatar. You guys know me… I’m a grandpa! This showing was way too late for me, and only a few minutes after the opening credits, I was horizontal and literally slept through the whole thing. I could not tell you what this film was about for the life of me! I should probably go back and see it, given all the hubub its been getting. We did have some fun in the theater beforehand, though…
On Saturday I left Ari to enjoy himself and went into the city before the snowstorm hit. We did finally get some accumulation… I love New York when its snowing. A hushed silence falls on the city, and everything is calm and peaceful. I stayed indoors almost all day, but I did manage to bundle up and get myself to the gym for an hour or so. It felt good to get back into it! Hopefully I’ll be able to go tomorrow after work…. I can’t wait to get back into a routine again.
After the gym, I met Caitlin for dinner at Peacefood Cafe, a new(ish) vegan restaurant on Amsterdam avenue. We split an order of Pan-Seared Shanghai-Style Dumplings:
For my entrée, I ordered the Asian Greens salad with tempeh.
Caitlin got the pumpkin sandwich, which was delicious! I’ll be getting this next time.
For dessert, I enjoyed a decadent slice of raw key lime pie… scrumptious.
Caitlin got the cookie sandwich.
The next day was spent in a flurry of baking activity.
I made Holly‘s vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies…
Mark Bittman’s basic sugar cookies…
I always make these with my dad.
My mom and I made chocolate drop cookies with Hershey kisses inside… we made these over 10 years ago and have been looking for the recipe every since!
Not bad for a day and a half’s work!
Hope my coworkers like their goodies.
This is what I look like after a day in the kitchen eating chocolate and dough. Very attractive, I know
Ari met me in the city and we went to Sura for dinner. We had Douglass Hill Chardonnay…
We ordered a trio of appetizers with coconut crusted shrimp, virgin summer rolls (all vegetarian), and chive cakes.
Ari ordered crispy flounder…
… and I got the jumbo prawn in coconut broth. It was good, but I was pretty full from appetizers and probably didn’t need all of this.
Cookies for dessert, of course!
Off I go to work. Have a great day!

I guess I’m a grandpa, too — I totally would have fallen asleep!
The thought of my dad baking is just too funny for words.
