In favor of extra sleep, I postponed the two miles I was supposed to run yesterday and ran them this morning instead.  This was the first real run since Thursday- I’m not counting that one mile blip on Sunday- and I expected the days off to give my knees (and mind) some time to rest.  Unfortunately… after a mile, my right knee started hurting and hurt for the rest of the day.  No amount of icing or Aleve seems to be making it better.  So, in the next week and a half, I’ll be taking it easy, trying to cross-train to keep up my endurance, and come race day (March 21), we’ll see where I am.  If I can’t run the half-marathon, I’m not going to beat myself up about it.  Sound good?

Not too much has happened these past two days, but I did receive a lovely package in the mail from the lovely Amie!  These mini Larabars are the perfect snack-size…

… and made a great addition to my breakfast this morning, which I had to eat at my desk due to an 8 AM dentist appointment.

I mixed 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup water in the microwave, then added a sliced banana, 1/2 packet of Justin’s PB, and a Coconut Cream Pie mini Larabar.

This was one of the best combinations I’ve had in a long time!  It’s funny, because in the past I don’t remember liking this flavor of Larabar too much.  I might have to buy a big one just to crumble into my breakfast!

Amie also sent me a bunch of tea, which is going to come in really handy at work.  It may be getting warm outside, but my office is freezing!

After work I met Ada for dinner at Peacefood Cafe; we’ve been trying to make plans for over a month now, and it was so nice to finally get together again!  I ordered the pumpkin sandwich mashed and seasoned with a little sea salt, ground black pepper and extra virgin olive oil, topped with caramelized onions, ground walnuts, vegan goat cheese and seasonal greens (which I’ve ordered before and could probably eat every week without getting bored of it).  We were talking so much that it probably took about 45 minutes to eat!

We split two desserts.  The choices were endless and incredibly difficult to settle on, but we both enjoyed our selections.

The coconut cake (or “Funny Bone”) was moist and light…

… and the magic cookie tasted like a magic bar (/ 7-layer bar/ hello dolly) but was also made with shredded carrots.  Mmm!

Regular posting will continue tomorrow.  I had high hopes of staying up late to work, but I can barely keep my head up!  All I want to do is sleep… have a great night.

  • I hope your dentist appointment went as well as Maya’s. :)

A cookie with shredded carrots? Sounds like a keeper to me!

  • I buy the coconut cream Lara just for oats and baking- I don’t like it by itself, but it’s good with other things. Peacfoods- you, me, August. Be there :D

Sounds like a good plan RE running…keep us updated x

  • Awwwwwww get lots of rest girl, and good that you are taking it easy on your knee : )

Sounds very responsible about the running. It seems as if your knee/leg still needs time to recover, and it’s not worth the pain or the possible worse problems to push it. See where you are on the 21st, and NEVER beat yourself up about making a wise decision. It’s hard to face up to disappointment, but happens. We’re all proud of you for how you’re grappling with these difficult, but common, situations. Part of the “human condition”.

  • Those mini laras are so darn cute! They are perfect pre-running fuel too. Those desserts are making me drool. You may want to check out my blog ;)

  • Oh my gosh, I WANT that coconut cake! Yum! I love that ginger-aid tea, too. It really helped me when my stomach was giving me trouble.

  • Ada

It was so nice to catch up and grab dinner last night! That funny bone cookie was the bomb dizzle haha. We must definitely meet up again soon:)

Take care of that knee girlie!

i have been dying to try the coconut cream pie. never haveeeeeee.

    those desserts look wondeeeeful.

  • don’t you HATE it when the office is freezing! sometimes over the summer i used to be the girl with the sweater on on the train in 90 degree weather. damn offices.

i’m glad you’re taking it easy peazy :) sounds like you’re doing the right thing and being SUPER smart about your knee! there’s so many races in your future why blow them all for just one! even though i know how frustrating it is to train train train and then not get to compete at the level you saw yourself. but keep your head up girly :)

ummm those office eats look to die faw!

Cookies made with carrots? Well that’s one way to meet your daily veggie needs! Hope your knee feels better.

i eat breakfast at my desk every morning (most everyone at my office does) and i must say, it’s one of my favorite moments of the day. what i’m doing right now, in fact!

sorry about your knee, but good for you and your positive attitude! also, i want that pumpkin sandwich like, yesterday.

  • My office is FRIGID in the summer… I’m kind of dreading it.

I’m kind of infatuated with it now, but I really think you should give acupuncture a shot (no pun intended)… can’t hurt, can it?

    <3 <3

  • Sleep it all off! ANd maybe plan a little non running sweat sesh, a good sweat always makes me feel better!

  • oh goodness gracious, that pumpkin sandwich looks and sounds off the top!!! I am SO going to mash up my sweet potato for some good old sweet potato panini tonight!! Thank you for the inspiration dear!!

  • I am so jealous of your eats today it’s unreal. And I agree with you on that Lara – it’s much better as a “mix-in” than on its own.

  • Sorry to hear about your knee problems. I feel your pain! Between my knees and my back I am only to do about a week of training at a time before I end up having to take a week off. I’m icing, taking ibuprofen, wearing knees sleeves and getting a massage tomorrow. Hopefully I can make it through these next two races and then maybe incorporating more weights and yoga before the next race will help.

  • So glad you received the baby Lara’s…enjoy darling… so sorry to hear about your knee troubles..keep your head up! I have terrible knees from years of running when I was younger…Have a great day and enjoy the Lara’s.

  • Sorry about your knee. Hopefully taking some time off will help and you will be ready to go for the half!
I really want to eat at Peacefood Cafe. Next time I’m in NYC I have to go!

  • I need to make that sandwich. It looks pretty fantastic. I will be rooting for you on race day!

  • Pumpkin Sandwich? You´re kidding me!
I need one of those. NOW. Haha ;)
Amazing pics, as always. Were those old-fashioned oats? I wasn´t sure…
Have a great Friday, Katie! And I hope you knee gets better soon :)

  • My right knee isn’t being so kind, either. Take care of yourself! Instead of ice, I’ve been using a bag of freezer-burned green beans. Healthier, maybe? ;)
I LOVE Peacefood!! I literally bumped into Mira Sorvino the last time I was there! Have you tried the chickpea fries? They are addicting!
    xx

PS: Adding you to my blogroll. :)

  • Hi honey, I’m just catching up on your posts and i’m so sorry to hear that you’re knee is working with you right now! but I think you have a great mentality about the race and how it’s going to go. you’re running the race to have fun, and i’m sure you will! i don’t know if you read healthy Ashley’s post on the gasparilla marathon she ran, but maybe it could be something to inspire you that even though you might be injured or can’t finish a race by a certain time, you can totally still have a great time. best of luck honey! i’m sure you’ll do great! take your time, keep icing, elevating and compressing (i always wrap my knee in an ace bandage in my off time) your knee! sending you healing vibes!

  • [...] work, I met Ada for dinner at Peacefood Cafe. We went here the last time we saw each other, too! (I just read through that post… it was in the height of my half [...]
