A Hit and A Miss: Skinny Water & Primal Strips

Honesty will always be the only policy here on LVP, especially when it comes to product endorsements. As you all know, I sometimes receive complimentary samples of food items to review for Lilveggiepatch. I have never been paid to give something my seal of approval, and I will always tell you when something was given to me for free. I really have no reason to tell you I like things when I don’t, and I certainly don’t want you to go out and waste your money on things I don’t actually like!

So, from time to time, I review things I’m not so crazy about. Enter Skinny Water.

Skinny Water beverages are enhanced waters that do more than just refresh. A true “aquaceutical,” Skinny Water starts with super-purified water and adds a unique combination of electrolytes (calcium and potassium) along with EGCG, an extract of green tea, to promote hydration and nutrient-absorption. Building on this base formula, each flavor of Skinny Water adds other neutraceutical enhancements.

I like the emphasis on fitness and activity, but I do not like the message that “skinny” sends. I appreciate that consumers may be attracted to a “zero calorie, zero sugar, crave-controlling and metabolism-boosting” beverage (the same way that magazines touting easy steps to “lose the belly fat!” sell thousands of copies)… but the taste didn’t do it for me, either.

Each flavor was so sweet it tasted like drinking pure syrup. I tried drinking 1/5 of the bottle and diluting it with water, and it was still too sweet! As Ari said, “It tastes like I shouldn’t be putting this into my body.”

I think these would be great to drink if you’re sick, but as is, I really can’t see myself trying these. Thank you for letting me sample these, Skinny Water.

I also really had the chance to sample Primal Strips, flavored vegan jerky made from textured vegetable protein, soy and shiitake mushrooms. They are kosher, cholesterol free, preservative free, and very high in protein.

I was excited to try these out because while I have a fair amount of sweet and portable snacks like granola bars and dried fruit, I don’t always have an easy time finding savory grab-and-go snacks that are substantial but low in calories.

These have great texture! They’re hearty and satisfying, and have great texture: they’re almost caramelized. I love how “meaty” they taste. It really shreds, which is nice to have every once in a while for a non-meat eater.

Mesquite Lime

Sweet! Tastes like (what I remember) BBQ pork tasting like.

Thai Peanut

Mmm! I love peanut sauce, and t his tastes just like restaurant-style mock duck. Mildly spicy.

Hickory Smoked

Sweet, and a little spicy. Maybe a little too sweet.

Hot & Spicy

Dryer and a little tougher than the rest of the flavors. I like the spice, but am not a fan of the texture.

Teriyaki

Not as sweet as the others, or quite as flavorful.

Texas BBQ

Sweet and rich, with a light spice. A little like Hickory Smoked.

Bottom line: I love these. They’re great to pack as emergency snacks; I kept these in my desk and usually ate them after lunch when I needed a little protein-spike. I would certainly buy these again (I’ve seen them at Whole Foods).

Thank you, Primal Strips!

What is your favorite on-the-go savory snack?

  • Want to know the “Skinniest Water” of all? Water. I’m brilliant.

  • my favorite would have to be a clif bar or a a pre-made deli flat with some pb slapped on it :)

i agree with the skinny water. i didn’t think it was all ‘that’ great, but the fact that it’s called skinny water is a little much. for them it may be good because some people actually think that it’s a calorie burner without reading the label.

  • i kno i havent blogged in a while but ive definitely been keepin up with your blog! love it somuch!!

usually im not a huge fan of ‘fake meat’ but those sound intriguing.

not a big fan of the skinny water either– i like the vitamin water though :)

  • Boo, I’m sad to see you didn’t like the water. I got a free sample of one at Bloomingdales this weekend and I really enjoyed mine (I think it was a raspberry?).

  • Love primal strips! Too bad about the water though, I hate artificial tasting beverages. I actually tried vitamin water’s new “zero” and it was surprisingly good.

  • Hmm my favorite go to savory snack would be some kind of larabar *cough pb cookie cough* They sell the primal strips at my work but I havent bought them yet because i havent been sure on the taste. I shall pick one up tonight :)

  • Blegh. I don’t think I’d be a fan either, most flavored waters give me the willies. The strips sound interesting, though.

  • Yay! Way to be honest, my friend. I really despise the “skinny water” message, too.

BUT I agree that primal strips are a great high-protein option for veg-heads :)

  • I’ve heard good things about those primal strips– I’ll have to try them!

I hate the name “skinny” water…so obnoxious :-(

  • Um… what’s wrong with good old-fashioned water? :/

I love those Primal Strips — it’s hard for me to find protein sources when I’m traveling because they need to be nonperishable, and these are awesome. I’ve never seen the Hot & Spicy flavor anywhere, though!
