Parade by Day, Play by Night

Morning morning, boys and girls. Are the birds singing outside your window, too? I feel sort of like Cinderella, only they’re not in here helping me get dressed and powder my nose. If your life was a Disney movie, which would it be?

Yesterday I wasn’t in the mood for oatmeal, so I had a bowl of Chobani Vanilla yogurt with a banana, Cocoa Bliss Kaia granola, and superchunky peanut butter.

At work I snacked on an orange in the morning, an apple in the afternoon…

… and a mini Chocolate Brownie Clif bar before lunch. I was a starvin’ marvin’.

I had actually forgotten yesterday was the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, but I could hear it from the office all day! It was pretty raucous… I saw more than a few puddles of “maybe-I-shouldn’t-have-eaten-that-hot-dog-after-drinking-since-8,” but it seemed like people were having fun.

I ate my lunch quickly, so I would have time to run an errand (Cocoa Coconut Chili with TJ’s Harvest Grains Blend & Laughing Cow Light, steamed broccoli)…

… then braved 5th avenue.

It took 20 minutes just to get across the street! But… Gap had a jacket I really had to have. Fashion waits for no saint.

After work I met my mom for a glass of wine at Nizzo, an Italian restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen that looked great! We’ll have to go back.

IMG_1871.JPG

I got a glass of Cheverny.

IMG_1870.JPG

I may not know a lot about wine, but I always enjoy whites from the Loire Valley, like Vouvray and Sauvignon Blanc.
IMG_1872.JPG

Then we skipped down the block to Kodama to meet my dad for Japanese. It was hoppin’!

IMG_1877.JPG

I started with miso soup…
IMG_1874.JPG

And for my entree, I ordered assorted sashimi… my favorite!
IMG_1878.JPG

I traded a piece of tuna for a bite of my dad’s seafood nabe udon.

IMG_1879.JPG

After dinner my mom and I left my dad with the bill and rushed over to The Lite Choice… we’re nice girls like that ;-) I got a small with half French Vanilla, half Hazelnut Fudge and topped with chocolate chips and raspberry dark chocolate cups.

We found my dad again at the ticket line for Race, the new play by David Mamet starring James Spader (whom you may recognize as the Brat Pack star of films like Pretty in Pink, Mannequin, and Wall Street), David Alan Grier and Kerry Washington. The acting was great, and I’m still processing the play itself. When my dad first mentioned getting tickets, although I’d heard of the play, my mind felt so far away from culture and college (where I focused on African American literature) that for a split second I thought it had to do with running! Oh, Katie.

I love going to the theater on weeknights, but it can be hard sometimes to get home so late. Luckily this was only 90 minutes, so I was in bed by 11. My inner gramps was quite content.

Half-Marathon Training update: The race is Sunday… as in two days after tomorrow. I just attempted 5 miles on the treadmill only to have to stop after 1.8 and switch to the cross-ramp for 10 minutes. “Whatever happens on Sunday, I’m going to have fun…. Whatever happens on Sunday, I’m going to have fun…”

I’m going to try and stop at Lululemon after work to treat myself to a nice tech shirt. All of you Lemonheads: do you have a favorite Lululemon long-sleeve shirt that’s good for layering? I’m planning on wearing a tank top underneath, but I don’t want to get too hot.

Bonne journée :-)

That looks like such a fun evening! The sashimi looks super yummy, we still have to go to Tenzan one day. Have fun shopping at Lululemon, I picked out a shirt there before Miami and it gave me that little extra confidence boost to run hard;) Did you know there’s a Lululemon outlet store at Woodbury Commons???

  • That fro-yo looks so good…I want to see the Gap jacket!

You’re going to have fun in your race!!!

  • How fun!! I miss the St. Patty’s parade that happened in my old neighborhood… I’m really jealous you saw the new Mamet play. He’s one of my FAVES! House of Games is one of my all time favorite movies :)

  • Your parents are adorbs!

I would recommend a lulu shirt but I haven’t worked there in over a year so I don’t know the current products! But all lulu stuff is awesome so just go in and they’ll help you find something great. Good luck with the race, I’ll be thinking of you! I like your mantra.

  • I like your mantra for Sunday – keep repeating it girl!

  • you will do AWESOME on sunday!!!!! don’t stress about it :) it’s weird i think that things always hurt more the more we think about them. i know for me whenever i get the idea that i want to run the next day at the gym my hip starts hurting me. and i’m not sure if its just me making me think my hip is hurting mroe then it is or if it really is. i’m TOTALLY not saying that about you at all haha and i feel like that came out so wrong i was just saying that about me hahaha wow i’m blabbing. anyways you’ll kill it and have fun :)

p.s. i love how your dad threw his tie back hahaha

I suggest the RUN SWIFTLY L.S. Tech Shirt! (http://shop.lululemon.com/RunSwiftly_Tech_LS/pd/c/540/np/540/p/1823.html) It will allow your body to stay both warm and cool! YOU CAN do it girlie! I am so excited for you, just go out there and HAVE FUN! no matter what happens you know you put your heart into preparing your body as best as you can! I heart you chica!! Have a great thursday! xoxo!!

  • Now that is my idea of a perfect breakfast- deliciousness. I love that you meet up with your parents for special mid week dinners/lunches/theater, etc! So cute. I’m super jealous of your access to froyo- I want some! Might have to go into Charleston this weekend :) Our town has 1 froyo place but its just meh

  • Good luck on Sunday! How ever it ends up – you are out there trying and living life!

I agree the swift tech shirt is the best! It is what helped keep me warm on many crazy cold morning runs.

  • I’m so sorry about your knee! I know you want to rock your run on Saturday! I’m still having knee pain so I made an appt with an orthopedist on Tuesday. Hopefully he can help and the race on Saturday (and yesterday’s 5.5 mi) don’t make it too much worse.

  • Ewww to those special puddles! Please post a pic of your Gap jacket – love that store so I bet it’s cute!!

Good luck Sunday!! You can do it! Have FUN :)

  • Your dad and his tie is cracking me up :)

Good luck in your race, you’ll do great!

  • i nearly trampled at least 17 people in green hats who were screaming on my walk to work yesterday. i think working at an irish pub last st. pat’s traumatized me for life haha.

remember you’re running because it’s fun – there’s no pressure. it’s going to be beautiful outside this weekend, so it’s a fantastic excuse to soak up the sun, whether you run, walk, or crawl (that would be interesting, no? :) ). who cares how fast or slow you go, or how much you’re able to finish. it’s just a fun way to spend a spring saturday.

also, i’m dying to see race! i have a slight obsession with mamet. you’ll have to tell me about it tonight!

  • Sounds like you had a great time with your parents; great food, wine, and fro-yo, can it get any better ?1? :) No worries, you are going to do have so much fun on Sunday!!

  • I spent one St Patrick’s Day in NYC and am glad I wasn’t there this year…craaaaazy crowds! We don’t celebrate it here so I wasn’t expecting anything big. Woah. I was surprised!

    Pics of the jacket please?!

You WILL have fun on Sunday and you’ll be awesome no matter what happens because no matter how far you run, you are more than mileage or medals. Just do your best and if your body says ‘no’, remember that in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t the end of the world. Or your running. It’s just one race you are doing for fun.

  • Haha, I love The Gap! I hope you found the jacket and love it. :)

  • the parade looks soooo fun! and what a great sushi trip! Nice!!!! And the wine, sure looks like it was perfect, too :)
    xoxo

  • Do I spy a lunchbox in the corner of your lunch photo?? It looks super cute, if that’s what it is. Love that Cocoa Coconut Chili recipe:)

  • Jen

LOVE the eats per uszh…and i have to ask, do we get to see a picture of this adorable jacket?!?!

    love ya girl – let’s catch-up soon!

  • Pittsburgh apparently has a really crazy St Patrick’s Day celebration. Next year I want to be in the states so I can celebrate my Irish heritage!

  • I love the attitude for the race! I hope your knee feels great and if not, i’m sure you can walk a bit and meet some fun new people! makes for great stories!!!

  • how FUNNN! i could eat sushi and froyo everyday and be so happy. it looks awesome!

  • that sashimi plate makes me want sushi now, it’s 2am. lol. i love sashimi too. i like the clean taste of the fish, not all the rice and sauce!
