Cherry Bomb

This morning when I woke up I was completely confused. Saturday…? Sleeping in…? Sunlight streaming through my window…? It was such a nice, calm feeling, and I can’t wait to go outside and feel the warm air!

When I woke up yesterday, I started the day by unrolling my mat and doing a 20-minute Hip Opening Flow from Yogadownload.com. No matter how much I stretch, or how often I do this practice, my hips joints and psoas muscles always feel tight! It feels so good to get into half pigeon and feel them release.

Breakfast was a bit of an experiment yesterday. I mixed 1 tsp of chia seeds into 1 6 oz container of Vanilla Chobani and let them soak while I showered.

Then I mixed in 1 banana, 1/2 35 gram packet of Vanilla Sun Warrior protein powder, and 1 scoop superchunky peanut butter.

It was pretty good! Thick, filling, and held me over quite well. Before lunch I also had an orange + apple.

Lunch itself was Cocoa Coconut Chili over Trader Joe’s Harvest Grains Blend and half a head of steamed broccoli. (I froze the last portion of chili to save for a rainy day… I ate it four times this week, and while it’s delicious, enough is enough.)

The weather was phenomenal…

… so Danielle and I ate outside! I think it is so important to take full advantage of your lunch hour to give yourself a chance to recharge.

Later in the afternoon I snacked on an Oats ‘n Dark Chocolate Nature Valley bar, which I loved! I’ll have to track these down.

After work I went downtown to pick up my race packet at the New York City 1/2 Marathon Exp. After I got my number and shirt, I pounced on the Zico Coconut Water stand to sample their Pomberry flavor (I liked)…

…then found the Cabot Cheese stand, where I tried their 50% reduced fat pepperjack (mmm), sharp cheddar and something else.

After I made sure I had picked up every free item, I met Caitlin at the movie theater to see The Runaways. My hopes weren’t too high for this, but I loved it! The music was great, the costumes and makeup were perfect… the only slightly off-putting part of it was seeing Dakota Fanning all grown up. Makes me feel old!

The movie let out after 9:30, at which point we were both famished. We popped into Republic, a Thai noodle bar in Union Square, and immediately ordered Singha beers.

We split an order of grilled eggplant (which I must learn to make)…

… and each ordered the same entrée, Thai Noodle Salad with jicama, carrots, mint, peanuts and peanut sauce. I wish there had been some kind of protein in there, but I brought the leftovers home and will be able to add as much tofu or shrimp as my little heart desires.

No night is complete without dessert, so we popped in to 16 Handles (after showing Caitlin Stogo, which I have to get back to as soon as possible). I filled my cup with a small bit of dulce de leche and the rest with Eurotart and topped it with kiwi, strawberry, peanut butter cups and one yogurt covered pretzel. Every time I go to a DIY soft-serve place, I have to have a pretzel on top!

The subways were s-l-o-w last night and I was pretty tired by the time I got home. I did page through this month’s Health magazine before bed, though, and while I love this magazine for the most part, the cover (like so many covers of women’s magazines) made my blood boil. On this single page, there were no fewer than four quick-fix weight loss “secrets” :

  • The #1 Way to Weight-Loss Success
  • Walk A Little, Lose A Lot – drop 12 Lbs. in 4 Weeks!
  • Tone Every Bulge in just 10 minutes!
  • Eat Your Way Slim: 7 Amazing Fat-Burning Foods

Would you still buy a magazine if it didn’t promise to make you more beautiful or lose weight in a pinch?

  • I am loving the sunshine so much :D :D :D Is it supposed to be sunny for the race? Thai food always looks so good… I need to give it another whirl. I have only eaten it once (at Sea Thai Bistro) and didn’t love it :(

I think it’s almost impossible to find a magazine these days that is aimed at women and DOESN’T have some kind of diet tips. All you need to do is look at the statistics of number of women on diets at any given time- yeah, it bugs me, but magazines are business at the end of the day and they write what people want to read. I have noticed since moving back to the UK how many advertisments in the US publications are for some sort of diet pill or weight los aid- you never see that in the UK. Just the occasional slim-fast or special-k ad.

  • I would totally still buy a magazine if it didn’t have get slim secrets! It’s funny because as different as each premise sounds, as if the author has uncovered a new way to lose weight, they usually boil down to the same thing. They are hardly ever revolutionary. The headlines do sound enticing sometimes but they are almost always the same. All things we already know to do! (walk more, slow down eating, eat breakfast, drink water, etc)

Woah, I almost went to Republic last night with my friends but then it was cancelled. Crazy!

Good look tomorrow, you are totally going to rock it:) Just enjoy the ride and all the nice sights.

  • I love those Chocolate Oats bars too! I can’t find them anywhere except at my boyfriend’s college where they are sold individually. :(

  • oh wow your breakfast looks PERFECT! i love bfasts that are thickkk and creamy :) mmmm haha weird julie.

    YOU’RE GONNA KILL IT TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Might the title of your post be a reference to the epic Spoon song “You Got That Cherry Bomb”? Just wonderin…

I don’t waste money on mags like that. They make me so mad. I love Zooey though, so I’m torn!

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW! You’ll do great girl!

  • Of course I would. I just don’t think that magazine’s would believe us, both on the editorial and production ends… :/

Dinner looks delicious! I absolutely love Republic. Last time SnackFace (Kailey) and I were there we just about ordered the same exact thing. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend and, GOOD LUCK!

  • Yummy chai ‘pudding’! That looks great!

We finally had our lovely sunny day here in KC, MO but then BAM it’s a snow storm today….going on six inches already!

  • You are ADORABLE!

Have you read Vogue lately? I sat down with this month’s copy (the one with Giselle on the cover) last night, and I was SO impressed with the attention/articles on body image. It was so refreshing to see!!!

  • I love how the days are near when eating outside can become routine. Something about enjoying lunch in the sun is just so refreshing!

Glad you had a wonderful day. Sounds perfect hun!

Take care and have wonderful weekend!

  • Looks like you had a yummy day!
And I agree about the magazine thing. Women have more important things to think about than losing weight. How about some tips on how to be healthy and happy, and some yummy recipes, hmm?

  • It looks like the breakfast experiment turned out well! It’s so nice that you were able to eat outside, the sunshine can do wonders for the body!

  • I’m loving this weather!! :)

Health has been one of my favorite magazines for a long time. I would never actually buy a magazine that claims to have “the secret to weight loss” — most of them do, but obviously they don’t work, because if they did then it wouldn’t be on the cover every month!

Oh, PS — those bars are pretty easy to find. ;)

i think zooey deschanel looks so so airbrushed on the cover of this mag, but i love her (and i love she & him) so i don’t care that much, ha.
