The day started like any other. I awoke early, with a laundry list of things to do and my mind set to get them done as efficiently as possible so I could enjoy my day off.

I made breakfast:

Oatmeal.JPG

  • 1/3 cup oats cooked in 1/3 cup water
  • pumpkin
  • warmed frozen berries
  • 1/3 Walnut Date Boomi Bar
  • Cinnamon Raisin Swirl peanut butter
  • cinnamon
  • stevia

Just as I was getting ready to go to the gym, Ari came in and asked if I was ready to go. Go where…? To Coney Island, of course! I didn’t need to be asked twice. We packed a bag, hopped in the car, plugged in the GPS and were off.

As soon as we got there, we didn’t even think– we just high-tailed it to the Cyclone.

Assuming Splash Mountain and the water ride at the Mall of America don’t count, I’ve never been on a real roller coaster.

I’m glad we didn’t put much thought into it… I didn’t have a chance to get scared! It was really fun, although my stomach was in my throat during the first two dips.

We walked around, exploring the boardwalk.

We’d heard tell of a bakery/cafe with vegetarian options, but when we found the storefront we learned it had closed.

Instead, we split a mozzarepa: mozzarella layered between two sweet corn cakes. It was pretty good!

Ari also got some fries. I’ve never really been a fry person, but I nibbled on a couple.

The Boardwalk was filled with stands selling ice cream, Italian ice and slushies, so I got myself a cone of soft serve. Something was wrong with the machine, though, and the “Twist” came out all chocolate and very watery.

That’s better!

We tried to replicate the cover scene from one of our favorite books, Just Kids.

After an hour or so of fun, we packed back up and drove to a nearby movie theater, where we saw Toy Story 3 in IMAX-3D. Ari had just seen the movie the night before, but really loved it and wanted me to see it. I thought it was great! Parts of it were pretty dark for a children’s movie (but maybe they’ve always been like that and I just haven’t noticed?) and I got a little choked up at the end.

On the way home, we stopped at the Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn for groceries. I won’t get too excited about it, but I think Ari caught the Trader Joe’s bug ;-) I snacked on an orange in the car.

Back at the apartment, we unloaded the groceries, changed clothes, and went out for a 3.25 mile run. Dusk had just fallen and the light was beautiful. It also wasn’t too hot (it had been 90 during the day)! When Ari and I go together, we don’t have to worry about running in the dark as much as if it were just me.

We cooked a cozy dinner together, which we enjoyed on the bedroom floor. We had warm crusty bread + butter:

For the main event, we made 101 Cookbooks’ Cilantro Noodle Bowl. Don’t judge the dish by the photo… it was really good! Spicy, light, cool and refreshing.

For dessert, I had a mini Vosges Black Pearl Bar.

It really was the perfect day.

  • oh, coney island! this looks like a perfectly fun day. i saw toy story 3 in 3d last week – what fun! i agree that pixar throws some pretty intense plot twists for little kids, but that’s what makes them great – they market a kids movie with an adult plot so that everyone loves it. a+ in my book.

You guys are too cute :)

  • Too bad about the soft-serve machine :( But hey, what a fun outing!

  • I’m seeing Toy Story today – so excited!

i’m terrified of roller coasters…and always have been!

  • I want to go, I want to go! How fun. Some of those pics, it looks like you are standing in front of a fake backdrop. How friggin cute are y’all?!

And so glad your ice cream cone turned out, I would have done the same thing:)

  • What a perfect day! Very jealous as I head to a nearly windowless office.

  • Looks like an awesome day! :)

With all the times I’ve been to Coney Island, I’ve never ridden the Cyclone. Wooden coasters freak me out. ;)

Oh, and that is so great you can run with Ari @ night. It sounds great!

  • Sounds like a great day out!

  • Aww, that looks like so much fun! I’ve never been on a roller coaster either; I get motion sick just from riding in a car in the mountains, so I don’t think I could handle all those crazy dips and turns!

I LOVE Coney Island. I can’t wait to go this summer and check out the new Luna Park. My friend Matt has a video on facebook of us on the Cyclone and you can hear him laughing as I scream bloody murder and curse like a sailor. Scares the bejeezus out of me but is still tons of fun!

  • Oh my gosh, your dress is TOO cute. Perfect for Coney Island! My mom still talks about her first trip to Coney Island when she was a little girl living in New York– it was the first time she had sprinkles on her ice cream :-)

  • Jealous! can’t wait to get up to Coney Island this summer

  • First of all, that mozzarepa looks fantastic! Glad you guys had such a fun day!!

Woohoo for Ari catching the TJs bug – it’s the best kind of bug to have :)

  • looks like you had a great day, beginning to end!

I think my hub has caught the TJ’s bug too, thanks to my subtle influence :)

  • Aww, how fun!

We also LOVED Toy Story 3 (we saw it 3D IMAX too, so good) but I do have to say Disney always has those dark parts in their movies (maybe to make the light stuff even better by contrast) remember in Pinocchio where they are taken to that donkey place? Or in Dumbo when they get drunk and have weird hallucinations, also on the Lion King where Scar has that creepy song with all the hyenas in the canyon…anyway, Disney is awesome and with Pixar it’s even better:)

  • Fun Fun Fun! I was just reading about the evolution of Coney Island from nothingness to what it is today in a book called “Delirious New York.” It sounds like such a fascinating place, and when I finally someday come out to visit, we’ll have to go.We’ll wait till I’m not preggers, though, so we can ride all the rides! I LOVE roller-coasters.
I’m almost done with the book i’m reading right now, and you’ve totally inspired me to jump right into the copy of “Just Kids” you sent. Yippee!

  • What a fun day! I loved seeing your photos, they are all so crisp and colorful. I can’t believe I have never been to Coney Island before. ;)

  • Avery

You and Ari are so cute! What a great day with your man!

  • Ellen

You two are always doing something fun! I’m embarrassed to admit that I have never even BEEN to Coney Island..and I’ve lived in NYC for almost six years. Yikes. What are your feelings about Italian ice? I’ve recently been experimenting with them, and if you find a good one, they really can be quite tasty! Totally satisfies my ice cream craving, and that really says something coming from ME :) If you’re ever in Park Slope, you must try Uncle Louie G’s ice cream/italian ice. SO GOOD.

    hi katie!
i was just wondering, do you make your oatmeal in the microwave?

    love your outfit btw!

  • seriously you guys are like the most adorbs couple in the blog world. probably just the world? your polka dress + coney island are the match made in heaven :)

  • I LOVE ROLLER COASTERS!!! And hey, do you remember the Italian Ice from Kippy? I used to love them, but haven’t had one since :(

  • Too cute! I really want to go to Coney Island!

  • Sounds like such a great day. That Cyclone can really whip you around! My boyfriend and I tried it out when we went to Coney Island with my family, and it was the most rickety roller coaster I’ve been on.

By the way, you won the giveaway on my blog for a copy of Diet for a Hot Planet. Email me your address and I’ll send it on your way!

  • aww – this does sound like a perfect day :)

  • I love adding crumbled bars to my oatmeal–perfect texture addition.
You’re making me crave a roller coaster ride!

  • I couldn’t agree with you more – this really is the perfect day!

  • Oh fun!!!! A day at the amusement park is what everyone needs from time to time! Looks like you guys had a blast! :) Makes me want to go to Hershey park! :)

  • omg ur boy cracks me up so much in the last pic especially!

I LOVE AMUSEMENT PARKS!! im always the first to cut infront of little kids to get on the ride first.. call me horrible, but hey, its game on and every man for themselves hehe.

and thanks for ur comment on my wisdom teeth btw, and ur right feeling much better. its really sore tho since he had to remove a bit of the jam bone to pull the bottom teeth out, so i def. got a bit of the chipmunk teeth going on, but otherwise, at least i can chew now!

    xoxo <3

  • Haven’t been on a ride in a year, but were trying to get boss at work to take us to Six Flags. Hope she gives in for our ”4th of July office shindig” lol

  • Aya
