Nutrition on the Go: Bora Bora Organic Food Bars

Last week, I was sent a variety of Bora Bora bars to review for the blog. They also included a tube of extra creamy chapstick… the company must have known my number!

Bora Bora bars were inspired by the foods of Bora Bora, an island in French Polynesia. According to the website, the people of Bora Bora follow a diet of simple, unrefined foods, and Bora Bora bars strive to reflect that simplicity.

Bora Bora bars are:

  • USDA certified organic
  • do not contain refined sugar (they are sweetened with organic fruit, agave nectar, brown rice syrup and honey)
  • non GMO
  • non dairy
  • vegan
  • certified kosher
  • free of trans fats
  • free of soy
  • do not contain preservatives

Usually it takes me a little while to review a product because I don’t like to eat the same thing every day.  This time, however, I brought a new bar to work every day and was always excited for snack time!

Exotic Coconut Almond

My review: The texture reminded me a lot of KIND bars. The coconut isn’t overpowering; I wish all “granola bars” tasted like this! The big chunks of almonds make it quite hearty, resulting in the perfect mix of chewy and crunchy.

Pacific Mango Macadamia

My review: So tropical! I’m not usually a fan of macadamia nuts, but I love the combination of mango and coconuts.

Wild Pomegranate Pecan

My review: This bar is softer than the others. It’s tart but sweet, and I love the pecans! Most energy bars use any nut but pecan, and I loved that they incorporated them in.

Paradise Walnut Pistachio

My review: I love the strong honey flavor! The crispy rice is a nice surprise, and reminds me of Prana bars. I love the big pieces of pistachio and walnuts. It tastes like what should be in the perfect bowl of granola.

Island Brazil Nut Almond

My review: Ordinarily I don’t love Brazil nuts (I eat them for their high selenium content), but I enjoyed them mixed into this bar. It’s not too sweet and just crunchy enough, and I loved the sunflower seeds and raisins! Like the perfect trail mix.

Bottom line: The bars I sampled had anywhere from 1g- 5g of protein, and 5g- 14g of fat. I ate these in the middle of my shift at the restaurant, and they gave me enough energy to pull me through to the end without feeling either too full or still ravenous. I loved the unique ingredient combinations, the textures, and that the company only uses whole, organic ingredients.

Would I buy these? Yes! They’re perfect for keeping in my purse (or the “emergency bag” that I keep with me at work).

Enter to win 3 cases of Bora Bora bars!

Thank you, Bora Bora! I look forward to trying the other flavors.

When it comes to energy bars, do you prefer salty or savory? Fruity or chocolatey? Smooth or crunchy?

  • I’ve been really interested in trying these but if they are vegan I am confused by the honey flavor you talked about…

I prefer a combo of salty and sweet! But it depends on my mood…I like fruity, chocolatey, smooth, AND crunchy!

I love the salty/sweet combo of a choc covered pretzel…actually that happens to be my favorite food on earth…pathetic..I know:)These bars sound so unique! Hope I win so I can expand my horizons.

  • I am a snackbar-aholic. Especially when I’m working and need some prime on-the-go fuelage. I’ve tried the coconut bar but wish it were a little more coconutty. Then again, I wish everything in my life was a little more coconutty, just because I adore it.

  • I’ve been seeing these bars all over! I need to check them out!

  • I really like these bars, and actually bought one while I was out and about today.

As for bars, I’m all for a mix of salty and sweet, especially when dried fruit, nuts, and chocolate are involved.

  • I haven’t tried these bars yet but have heard great things! Wild Bars are my very favorite. Mayan Spice is the best!

  • It depends what mood I’m in – but Luna has such great flavors and Clif’s Mojo Mountain Mix has every great taste in – my favorite, hands down!

  • haha the packaging alone on those makes them look tasty! Definitely gonna see if they’re sold around here.

Ohh I’d love to try these! I actually saw them in a store this weekend, but opted for a FullBar instead. Eh, it was alright, but these sound better :) I’m a chocolate or PB/nut girl all the way!

  • dense, sweet (not overly), and chocolatey! oh and CHEWY!! thats what i look for :)

but if its a quick snack i usually go for sweet, salty, and crunchy! <3

  • I usually go for a granola bar that is a little sweet, a little salty, and chewy! I’ve been looking for some new bars to try, so maybe I will give these a whirl…they have some intriguing flavours!

  • Bora Bora, tasty tasty. Those look great! I think I would have liked to try the Exotic Coconut Almond. I am a big fan of salty and sweet combos, but most of my energy bars lean on the sweeter side. I blame my need for anything related to dessert.

  • Thank you lilveggiepatch! We are so glad you liked the bars and chapstick!

Claire- you asked about the bars being vegan. Most of our bars are vegan friendly but a few of them, including the Exotic Coconut Almond and Paradise Walnut Pistachio, are not vegan. On our website you can check which products are vegan and which are not.

    Thanks!

  • Nice article and I thought it was better from prior entries on the site.
