Magical Mystery Tour

Ari got back from playing Vans Warped Tour late Wednesday night, so we both took Thursday off and spent the day together. We got up early and went to the diner for omelets (egg whites with spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms and feta)…

toast and plenty of coffee.

We got a few important things done around the house (namely finishing Friends With Money- not our favorite- so I could maintain my stellar Netflix schedule), and I went to the gym for a quick 25 minute arms/legs/abs session. Before I left, I had a peach yogurt:

I made myself a quick kitchen sink salad… it wasn’t the tastiest, but it did the trick.

Salad.JPG

  • 1 heart of romaine
  • corn
  • 1 kiwi
  • grape tomatoes
  • 1 tofu burger w/ Annie’s Naturals’ BBQ sauce
  • rice wine vinegar

Then we were off!

Ari wouldn’t tell me where we were going, but told me to bring sandals and snacks.

We drove…

… and ate…

… and drove some more. I had no idea where we were going. My last good guess was Southampton (my family has a house there), but we drove straight through the town and kept on!

Finally, we got to our destination: Montauk Point. I hadn’t been in over 10 years. It was the perfect surprise! Montauk is on the very tip of Long Island, so naturally we strolled on down to look at the ocean.

We frolicked on the sand, barefoot…

… then went to look for a pleasant dinner spot. Once I figured out we were going to be in Montauk, I Tweeted to see if anyone had any suggestions on where to go. Sofia suggested Grosman’s Dock, so we could dine al fresco and gaze out at the water.

We picked up two Mixed Seafood Grill platters (grilled tuna, swordfish, and shrimp with salad and fries) and set up.

Now, I normally really don’t enjoy fries, but Ari introduced me to malt vinegar and I gobbled these all up! I couldn’t quite finish my fish, but it was so fresh and tasty.

We sipped white wine from tiny plastic cups, to add to the ambiance.

Unfortunately the seagulls were on the attack, and were quite bold! They perched right on top of our tables and beach umbrellas, and even came over and snatched up Ari’s cup mayonnaise and ate it wholeI (Good thing the boy hates mayo.)

After dinner, we took another of Sofia’s suggestions and stopped at John’s Drive-In on the way out of town.

We needed chocolate peanut butter ice cream to fuel up for the drive home!

It was a perfect day. We’ve taken a lot of these spontaneous day trips… two of my favorites were our trips to Woodstock and Coney Island.

Where was the last place you visited? Was it planned or a spur-of-the-moment trip?

  • What a sweeeet recap! Glad gosman’s worked out and I loooove john’s! And shrimp and wine out of plastic cups. Spontaneous trips are the most enjoyable, especially when the BF does the driving ;) (hate driving). My last spontaneous trip, believe it or not, was to montauk last august- my parents have been staying there for a week every summer since i was a baby, and i randomly called in sick to work, took an overnight LIRR ride, walked along the beach at 4am like a weirdo, made a (questionably sketchy) friend, met my parents on the am, beached it up/ hung out with the fam, and took the jitney back that night so i could make it to work the next day. Only a little crazy, right? :) i blogged about- it’s somewhere in the archives!

  • Lovely time for you two to spend together!!

Last place I visited = California. You already know all about that, haha ;)

  • that looks like so much fun! I’ve never been to Montauk but have always wanted to go. I haven’t visited many places recently – my last trip was probably Boston and wasn’t spontaneous. I’m a planner – spontaneity makes me anxious :)

This is a lovely post. I’m glad you had so much fun at Montauk Point! I’ve never been, but looking at your photos, I can tell it’s a really nice place. I’m surprised the beach looks so deserted though.

I am now hankering some ice cream. :)

  • Ahh I’m going to Montauk in a couple weeks and I absolutely CANNOT wait! Looks awesome. Seafood+ice cream=Heaven.

  • I have missed reading your blog…always such a pick-me-up! Gorgeous pictures and sounds like a perfect day from start to finish. Last place we visited was Virginia Beach. It was a planned trip, our first vacation with our now 2-year-old daughter. I wasn’t much of a beach lover before, but after watching my daughter stomp in the sand and laugh wildly at the waves, I can’t wait to get to another beach again soon.

  • My husband only does dates that are secret surprises! I love/hate it because I’m in suspense and because I think it’s so sweet that he puts so much time and effort.

  • Ana

What an a lovely surprise!!! Looks like you had a great time, sounds like a date pulled right out of a movie, LOVE IT!

  • You made some first rate points there. I looked on the web for the difficulty and located most people will go together with together with your website.

  • That is a great point to bring up. Thanks for the post.

  • An interesting dialogue is worth a comment. I feel that you need to write extra on this matter, it might not be a taboo topic however usually people are not sufficient to talk on such topics. To the next. Cheers
