From Their Kitchen to Ours: Stonewall Kitchen Review

Enjoy product reviews? I have another fun one coming up soon from CSN, where you can find everything from a bar stool to an immersion blender. Stay tuned!

About a month ago, I received a box filled with goodies.

Oh yes, I hit the jackpot. The Stonewall Kitchen jackpot, to be precise. My parents and I first discovered the company over 10 years ago, when we stumbled upon their shop in Portland, Maine, on the way up to the sleepaway camp where I spent my Augusts for four years. We fell in love with their jams, mustards and marinades, and always left the state with our trunk’s cargo a little heavier than when we entered it.

Years later, my mom and I spent a weekend in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and again found ourselves in Stonewall Kitchen‘s cozy store. When I think of the company, I envision long, lazy mornings spent over coffee, the newspaper, and delicious homemade pancakes. Gourmet, yet relaxed. And with their line of creative and tasteful products, that’s just the feeling Stonewall Kitchen has achieved.

I spent the last month savoring each of the products I was sent to review, and tried to give them my own creative twist.

DARK CHOCOLATE SEA SALT CARAMEL SAUCE

My family has been using Stonewall Kitchen’s hot fudge for years, so I was excited to see this new flavor! Dark Chocolate, sea salt and caramel?! Yes, please! It’s perfectly seasoned, rich and decadent, and the jar can be placed directly in the microwave- cap removed- and heated for 45 seconds.

My favorite way to enjoy it is over Greek yogurt and fruit.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH PASTA SAUCE

Butternut Squash Pasta Sauce.JPG IMG_5594.JPG

Whenever there’s something interesting on the menu at a new restaurant, I always order it. When I saw this butternut squash pasta sauce in the catalogue, I had to try it because I’d never heard of such a thing before! Isn’t pasta sauce supposed to be heavy and rely on the usual tomato and cream as its main components?

Not so! This sauce was light and a little sweet, and was all the better with a savory dish like Autumn Millet and edamame. Add some strong parmesan and it would really be something special.

ROSEMARY PARMESAN OLIVE QUICK BREAD

I usually prefer to make my breads from scratch, but this “just add beer!” mix was too good to pass up. We loved the rosemary/olive flavor so much that Ari and I finished the loaf in two days!

Just out of the oven or toasted with a little butter and a cup of hot soup, I would definitely make this bread again.

S’MORES BROWNIE MIX

Um, I think I’ll just let these photos speak for themselves.
S'Mores Brownie Mix.JPG IMG_5928.JPG IMG_5931.JPG IMG_5939.JPG

Yeeeeeah. These were freaking delicious! And incredibly dangerous to keep around the house :-D I made them a bit healthier by substituting half of the butter for applesauce, and the brownies were still rich and moist. I would definitely make these again for a party, or when there’s someone other than me around to eat them up!

GRANOLA PANCAKE AND WAFFLE MIX

Granola Pancake & Waffle Mix.JPG

Pancakes are one of those things that I don’t eat often, because when it comes down to it I usually prefer oatmeal or omelets. But when I do have pancakes, they better be good. And if the above photo doesn’t look enticing, I don’t know what does.

One thing I didn’t appreciate about this mix, however, was the ingredient list, which included items like enriched wheat flour and high fructose corn syrup. Had the flour been substituted for whole wheat pastry or plain old stone ground, and the high fructose corn syrup for good ole Main maple syrup, I would have been much happier!

Still, the mix made up some pretty delicious Pumpkin Pancakes.

Bonus: LEMON CURD!

Stonewall Kitchen Lemon Curd.JPG

Stonewall Kitchen did not send this to me… Ever since I discovered their Lemon Curd and Key Lime Curd last year, I’ve been hooked. I go through a jar or two a season! I bought this with my own money, and will continue to do so.

My favorite ways to use it are in nut butter sandwiches...

… and in oatmeal. Lemon curd + pumpkin make a fabulous couple!

Thank you, Stonewall Kitchen, for your generosity and innovation! I had so much fun reviewing these products.
