Gluten Free Goodies, Two Ways

I was recently sent boxes of goodies from two companies specializing in high quality, gluten-free foods. Mary’s Gone Crackers, who first caught my attention for their line of flavored rice crackers (if you haven’t tried them, you really should! They’re great for dipping, crumbling, and eating just as is). They’ve just launched two lines of products: Love Cookies and Just The Crumbs.

The faux bread crumbs were a surprise. I don’t know why I’d never have thought of these before; my parents always have a bag or two of bread crumbs at home to make things like sautéed flounder.

The crumbs come in three flavors: Original, Savory, and Caraway.

After a Twitter suggestion, I mixed up a pre-made serving of macaroni & cheeze with a can of tuna, and sprinkled some Savory Crumbs on top. It was delicious, and tasted just like old fashioned tuna noodle casserole.

My mom also has a great recipe for Scallop Pasta that I’ll be trying the crumbs out with. Do you have any other recipes that use bread crumbs?

The first cookies I tried were the Chocolate Chip and Double Chocolate. Crunchy and petite, they reminded me a lot of the Famous Amos cookies I used to love. Did you ever try those? I remember seeing them a lot at zoo cafeterias when I was a kid.

Lately I’ve found that my sweet tooth doesn’t crave sweet, sweet chocolate as much as it used to, and these Ginger Snaps and N’Oatmeal Raisin Cookies were just what I didn’t know I wanted. The N’Oatmeal Raisin is a little chewy, and the Ginger Snap has a nice little kick to it. Perfect with a cup of afternoon tea!

Still, the chocolate cookies were the biggest hit at our house. Even after I told Ari they were gluten-free, he kept going back into the fridge for more! The Chocolate Chip Cookies didn’t last long, but we did get to spend a few cozy nights munching on them and watching movies.

Kookie Karma‘s cookies, in addition to being gluten-free, are also dairy-free, egg-free, raw, vegan, handmade and certified organic.

Don’t think all those “frees” means the cookies are lacking in taste! Kookie Karma was launched in 2004 by Julie Novotny to offer the “freshest, best tasting raw and holistic snack products” they can.

Of course, the first cookie I tried was the Holistic Chocolate Chip. This was by far my favorite; if I hadn’t seen the packaging, I never would have guessed these cookies weren’t baked! This was honestly one of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had, store-bought or homemade. It was chewy but not mushy, the chocolate chips still slightly melty with a hint of coconut. I’ll definitely be ordering some of these soon!

The Holistic Choco Lot also tasted like a true chocolate cookie. It tasted just like a fudgy brownie! This was a close runner-up to the Chocolate Chip.

The Raw Cherry Cashew and Raw Lemon Fig were also delicious, and more what I’d imagined when I pictured a “raw vegan cookie.” They tasted a lot like Larabars: blended nuts and dried fruit. Still delicious, but not my idea of a cookie! I ate these more as snacks and less as after-dinner desserts.

I don’t ordinarily purchase gluten-free products as a rule, but I’m always interested in the ways people and companies creatively produce food alternatives.

Have you tried Mary’s Gone Crackers or Kookie Karma? What gluten-free products have you tried and loved?

Kookie Karma – noo. I’m surprised they’re marketed as cookies, if they’re just fruit/nut blends..I kinda don’t see that as a cookie either. They still look delicious though!
