Good morning, hope you slept well! How was your Monday?

Mine was fun! Ari’s mom is in town, so we started the day at the diner for a special breakfast treat.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had my usual omelet… I’ve been on more of a scrambled eggs kick, but this time I was in the mood for my old favorite.
Egg white omelet with spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms & feta; 7 grain toast with butter, tomatoes
Coffee is sort of a requisite at all diners, but I rolled with hot tea anyway.

I spent the day running errands, and I’m happy to report that I now have a) fuschia toenails, b) a couple new sundresses, and c) comfortable and cute new shoes (on sale!). I’ll post ‘em tomorrow
.
Because I was out and about most of the day, I didn’t end up sitting down to lunch until close to 4! Still, instead of ransacking the whole fridge as I usually do when I’m really hungry, I munched a few strawberries and made a real lunch.

It was simple, but this was one of my best salads recently! I think it was the combination of tender lettuce (from the CSA) + delicious dressing.
Summa’time salad
- kale
- lettuce
- chopped carrot
- 1/2 lemon + 1 T olive oil + 1/2 t lavender honey + 1/2 t dijon mustard + lemon sea salt <—- new favorite dressing!
- Summer Pesto drizzle
On the side, I had a cup of goat yogurt + crumbled blueberry yogurt cake. (Rebecca used this recipe for those of you who asked.) I kept the cake in the fridge overnight, and it was very moist, but went really well with the yogurt!
I spent the rest of the afternoon finishing this book and napping. I read this in about two days and I just couldn’t put it down. Do not read the summary! I try not to read book and movie reviews, and this is one of those cases when knowing the slightest thing will really spoil it. It’s good to be surprised with this one. I will say this, though: never before have I 1) cried from a book, and 2) had nightmares about one (even after reading The Shining when I was 12, and I was told that would happen). This did both.

I read it on the CrossRamp at the gym, and it literally brought me to tears (which I hope looked like I was just having a really intense workout). I had nightmares about it last night, and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I read the last page. The first half was a lot stronger than the second, but I still feel haunted by the characters and the story and think it’s one of the most memorable books I’ve ever read.
Strawberries for brain fuel:

We ended up having a late dinner, and ordered ourselves a Chinese feast! We have enough leftovers to fuel a small army (or a couple hungry MaltiPoos).

Ilana and I shared an order of stir-fried vegetables and steamed broccoli with tofu and brown rice.

Pickles tried to scrounge for scraps, but I think she only found a few grains of rice.

What was the last thing you book or film that really moved you?

My Monday was rest time – Slava and I had a 6 hour flight delay on Sunday (didn’t get back home until 3:00am!!!), so we caught up on rest.
American Psycho really intrigued me – I actually preferred the book over the film, but both were great (helloooo Christian Bale! haha).
Whoa– sounds like an intense book! I’ll have to check it out.
I’m reading Of Human Bondage right now and loving it. My dad gave it to me when I was in college and told me that it would tell me the meaning of life. Eight years later, I’m finally reading it and realizing he was probably right
Your diner omelets always make me a little jealous- they look so good! What a fabulous day. I need to get my toes done again- my feet deserve some extra loving right now
And that salad dressing sounds tasty. I’ll have to make it for just me though- Josh is not a mustard fan…Josh has been begging me to do some Chinese takeout. Maybe I will make that our Friday night dinner- he’ll be thrilled.
Room has been on my list of book to read, and I’d really love to get it from the library this summer. It’s a must, it seems!
We watched Winter’s Bone last night, and it was really eye-opening. I feel like I lead such a quiet life sometimes, and I often forget what other people in our country go through. (I too don’t want to give away the plot.)
I really loved The Help, which I read recently, but What is the What really moved me. Both are good reads. I’m eager to read The Room. I’ve been hesitant to pick it up since it sounds sort of depressing. I keep hearing good things though!
ooh man, you know a book is good when it gives you nightmares! i’m currently reading “widow for one year” by john irving and as always am stuck in the world of his characters. going to see midnight in paris on friday, can’t wait!
PS didn’t realize that was a yogurt cake from the other day. delicious! thanks for the recipe link.
That book is super intense! I read it in about two days as well! I remember my being so enthralled with it that my bf was sitting right next to me talking and asking me questions about something, and I swear to god, I didn’t even hear him! And you are right, the end is quite worth the wait. It sounds cliche, but I was so invested in the characters, I really did feel like I was in the story itself!
The last thing that truly moved me would have to have been “The Passion of the Christ” which I watched last summer… I rented it because I one of my guy friends said it was really good but really intense, and I felt like it was something that I, as a Christian, should see.
Intense is the understatement of the year. I’m glad I watched it by myself. There were times I was screaming outloud in anger, times where I was curled up in a ball sobbing my eyes, times where I felt so sick to my stomach I had to look away from the screen… it was one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences of my life. One that I will certainly never forget. I felt like I was in a daze for days after, and it certainly inspired a lot of prayer.
I absolutely loved Room. I just read it recently as well, and it stayed with me for days after finishing. Great read!!
oohhh that dressing sounds amazing! looks like i need to find some lavendar honey and stat!!
You always inspire me to read more, Katie! I do love to read but I don’t as often as I should. I think you’d like this link (though I’m sure you don’t need to expand your reading list!)

You put in the title of a book you love and it suggests other titles for you.

Movies: “Of Gods and Men”, which brings together artistically (and not pedantically) the universality of wisdom, families, religion, God(s), and courage.
Books: THREE JUNES by Julia Glass.
See it and read it.
I read Room lately too!!!! While I was reading it it didn’t give me any nightmares but like a week later I had a nightmare from it. There’s this book called Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and once I read it I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I was sad for a week.
I read Room awhile back. Definitely a different and interesting read! The books that have moved me the most, most recently, have been The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (OMG Devastating is all I can say!) and Thursday’s Child by Rumer Godden, which was so sweet/bittersweet.
