Just catching up?
—
While on our trip, we stayed at the Storm King Lodge in the hamlet of Mountainville, close to New Windsor, New York.

The bed & breakfast is a restored 19th century barn (you may or may not know that it’s a dream of mine to live in a converted barn one day when I’m a grown up
). The rooms are spacious and it’s easy to see why the owners- former New York City-dwellers- are passionate about taking their job.

Cozy room with a fireplace! (In said future converted barn, there will be at least one fireplace, too.)

My favorite part? The pool! Each day we dove in to cool off. I swam laps, although I didn’t bring goggles and looked like a dog paddling through the water, trying not to get my contacts wet.

Poolside reading? Yes, please!

Each morning, there was a spread with fresh fruit, granola, and Chobani Greek yogurt. One of the other guests was also lactose intolerant, and let me use his soy milk for my coffee!

Each day Hal, the innkeeper, cooked us entrées as well. The first day, he made a french toast bake using challah, blueberries and apricots. The second day we had cheese and veggie omelets. We didn’t go hungry.

My mom picked the perfect spot.

We drove to Beacon on our last night. Almost everything was closed- it seems to be more of a lunch town- but we caught an amazing sunset.

We found a sleek Japanese restaurant to go to called Isamu.

To start, we shared the tuna wasabi dumplings: fresh tuna wrapped around wasabi, avocado, and masago mixed with special sauce. They were good! Not dumplings in the traditional sense, but really interesting.

For my meal, I ordered a sashimi + avocado salad…

… and a vegetable roll. I could eat sushi rolls all day long.

All summer trips need good ice cream, and we surely found it! Beacon Creamery serves Jane’s ice cream, which we’d first tried at the Friends of the Farmer event in Copake.

We liked it so much, we went back twice.

Left to right: Peanut butter fudge, strawberry; cherry chocolate chip, coffee & cookies

For our last meal of the trip, we went to Homespun Foods, a recommendation from Hal at Storm King Lodge.

Homespun is a farm-to-table café with an open kitchen and a fabulous menu. They also sell local products, which were very hard to resist going crazy on. (I did purchase a granola bar, which was tasty.)

My mom ordered a chilled cucumber-watermelon soup. It had a little kick to it! We think they blended jalepeños in.

I ordered the special: Spanish tortilla with spinach and feta served with a side salad. Tasty, perfect, and just the kind of food you wish your neighborhood coffee shop sold.

Even though we were only a few minutes away from the Dia Art Foundation, we decided to save it for another time. It’ll be a fun excuse to make a day trip back to Beacon!

We were just too tired from a little detour we took to Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets. Priorities.
All of our Mother-Daughter weekends have been fabulous, but I think this may have been my favorite. Probably because as daughters get older, their relationships with their mothers changes and evolves. We had so much fun together!

I can’t wait for next year’s trip.

ahh beacon! been researching that town as i think BT might make a long weekend trip around there. that ice cream shop looks awesome, as does the inn. hudson valley lovvve!
My cousin works at the Lacoste outlet at Woodbury!! Ha. Looks like a fun trip.
Your mother is sooo lucky!
i stayed there with my mom and sister a couple of years ago in the fall!! how hilarious is hal? and i remember how amazing that french toast bake was. our trip was almost the exact same as yours (including stopping at woodbury commons on the way home) except we also ate at the culinary institute restaurant. unfortunately it wasn’t all that great, so you didn’t miss much there.
oh my god did tlc get new cups!? haha sorry just catching myself up!
what a FABULOUS trip with your mom! woodbury commons is so dangerous. the last time i was there i got this fabulous kate spade bag at the outlet store. i’m in love with the ks outlet store! i want to go back like now haha. i’ve never stayed at a b&b but i always think the ones out east on the island look so cozy and gorgeous.
what a cute little lodge! are those cute green shoes by marais? ahhh the sashimi/avocado salad looks so my “type” ha AND lululemon! where are your bags girl?!
I think I just fell in love with a new brand of shoes! After seeing that striking green of your shoes, I squinted my eyes just to figure out what brand they were in the picture, and have now been browsing the online shop for the last 40 minutes – at work
Looked like you had a beautiful trip … and I loved your line about how the bond between moms and daughters is continuously growing. I feel that same way with my moms!
Aw what a fun trip! I love traveling with my mom. I’ve been to Storm King Art Center before (I have some relatives that live in Garrison) and thought it was absolutely breathtaking.
I love this idea of going on a girl’s weekend every year.
Sounds like a great trip. Glad you had fun
I love your shoes!
looks like an absolutely fabulous weekend (: my mom and i do something similar, but it’s not to any place like that! we take the trip to the “women of faith” conference every september. i wouldn’t trade it for anything!
xo.
Girls like to wear boat shoes with the most ridiculously casual outfits, though. There is a time and place for every shoe we own:)
Wow, what a sensational trip.
What a perfect weekend! I love the charm and awesomeness of old farmhouses.
the spinach and feta spanish tortilla looks yum!
This seriously looks like an amazing trip! I love that lodge it is so gorgeous! All your eats look amazing, my favorites are the veggie roll and peanut butter ice cream! Two of my favorite things!
I LOVED this post series!
