Afternoon and happy New Year’s EVE! Last year I was working at a restaurant when the ball dropped… not ideal, but it could have been worse. This year’s going to be a lot more fun!

Yesterday I woke up feeling a little adventurous and decided to try out Heather’s Asian Fusion oats using tahini, miso and honey.

It was good, but I guess in my heart of hearts I was still half-expecting a sweet, nutty breakfast and I just couldn’t get past that. So, although I hate to waste food, I tossed that batch and made a new bowl of oatmeal with banana, almond butter, and Cinnamon Raisin Swirl peanut butter. I was a happy girl.

There was no time to waste. After running some errands in the neighborhood with Ari, Josh and I went to a local deli to build-our-own-salads. I got a small bowl of mesclun with chick peas, red beans, artichoke hearts, corn, carrots, cucumbers and sesame ginger dressing on the side.

Then I met up with my friend Will, who I haven’t seen in almost 2.5 years! Luckily we were able to meet up during his short visit to the city. We went to Starbucks (and lamented the lack of independent coffee shops on the UWS); I got a grande skim mocha. ‘Tis the season!

After coffee, I met up with Ari to do some last minute sale shopping (you can always find the best deals between Christmas and New Year’s), then found my little redheaded friend in the same neighborhood for dinner.

We happened upon a cute little Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side; we were so excited for dinner that we didn’t even take note of the name!

As soon as we sat down, we were given plates with soft, warm focaccia and olive oil.

We shared a bottle of Estrella Cabernet Sauvignon to warm our cores…

For my entrée, I ordered the Tre Colore Gnocchi with portobello and shiitake mushrooms, goat cheese and marinara. A warm bowl of past was just what I wanted, and this was perfect. Don’t you love gnocchi?! I did a pretty good job on the dish, and just about finished it.

After spending a couple hours catching up and eating, we made our way to Magnolia Bakery for dessert. I got the cupcake of the day: German Chocolate!

I wolfed it down in about two bites Then I made my way downtown to meet Ari and the rest of the family and we piled in the car and drove to their parents’ house for the holiday. Not everyone had eaten, so we made a pit stop at Roy Roger’s (more on that later!)…

Good times.

Have you sent me your questions entered my giveaway? Git ‘er done!

Have a safe, healthy and AWESOME New Year’s!!! What are you doing to ring in the New Year?

Another Christmas has come and gone, but for the first time that I can remember, I’m not experiencing that “let down” feeling one day, even two days after that’s similar to what I felt my first day home from sleepaway camp.

On Christmas morning, we headed into the living room to open presents, drink tea and coffee, and chat.

I was completely shocked to open a package and find…

the new Canon PowerShot s90! I’d been debating on whether I wanted to get an SLR or a smaller camera; I wanted an SLR for the quality, but didn’t want the hassle of carrying around another bag all the time. Well, this camera has the quality of the SLR, and it automatically adjusts to the appropriate setting, be it portrait or macro.

Eager to try out my new toy, I wasted no time by snapping photos of our special Christmas-morning breakfast: banana pancakes!

I wanted some protein…

…so I topped my three pancakes with plain Oikos Greek yogurt and real maple syrup.

It was quite a festive morning.

We hung around the house for a little while (Ari read me the first 20 pages of the camera manual), then headed out to the movie theater to see Sherlock Holmes. We always see movies on Christmas Day, and tend to go to the big blockbusters. The rest of New York City seemed to have the same idea as us; the line was so long it snaked up three flights of stairs! Luckily, my parents got there early and were in the front of the line. We tease my mom for wanting to get to movies, restaurants, and airports early, but sometimes she’s right

Meanwhile, Ari and I stopped at a deli to get lunch.

My spinach salad had beets, mandarin oranges, carrots, curried shrimp cucumbers, blue cheese and honey mustard dressing on the side.

We also snacked on chestnuts my dad had roasted in the morning…

… and sneaked some homemade, unbuttered (but generously salted!) popcorn in… all of a sudden, I can’t get enough salty snacks!

The movie was really good (as was the eye candy); although I fell asleep for the first hour. I don’t know what’s wrong with me- you really can’t take me anywhere! The theater was pretty warm, though. It was pouring rain when we left the theater, so we hurried home to leftovers and a warm apartment.

We had pumpkin/sweet potato/coconut soup…

… pasta using slow-roasted tomatoes for sauce (delicious)…

… and a palate-cleansing fennel-and-navel-orange salad.

We gobbled up the last of the bûche de Noël for dessert, of course!

The magic of the holidays doesn’t seem to be dissipating, no matter how old I get or how “adult” my life may seem to be. It’s not about gifts or fancy dinners, but a time to share with my family and those I love.

I hope you had a happy, healthy and safe holiday. Until next year…

Morning! Sorry about pooping out on you last night, but I was a tired lil’ thing! We had an out-of-office party downtown last night, and I didn’t end up getting home until late and eating dinner until even later. It was a lot of fun, though, and I met a lot of people from different departments in the company whom I’ve already communicated with through email, but had yet to put a face to their name. It’s all a part of the “new hire” process!

Yesterday morning I whipped up a batch of pumpkin cakes, but for some reason they were taking a very long time to get that “cake”-like consistency. I ended up just eating hot pumpkin, but it was still delicious! I topped it with my last honey-flavored Oikos Greek yogurt (am now officially out of any and all yogurt), 1/3 apple, walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ever since I couldn’t get my thermos open, I’ve been extra-cautious about not screwing the top on too tightly. Well, this time I was greeted with the other extreme: while I was waiting for the subway, I thought I smelled coffee. I had a sinking feeling it was coming from me, and lo and behold, it had leaked out all over my purse. I took the thermos out, not realizing it was still spilling, and poured more all the way down the front of my coat and the hem of my white dress. Then, when I was on the subway itself, I started to smell vinegar. Not again! This time I was positive it was mine, but I didn’t want to have another spilling disaster so I dealt with it when I got to the office. Dressing had leaked all over my lunch bag. I think I need one of these, to keep everything nice and organized.

Work itself was on the slow side, so I spent most of the day reading a manuscript. I snacked on the rest of my apple from breakfast.

I remembered to slice it, but the rest of my lunch was very loud and crunchy! I finally just closed my door for a minute so I wouldn’t bother everyone. I had the same salad as the night before: grilled tempeh, spinach, roasted Brussels sprouts, red cabbage and carrots.

And an extra-loud, salty and buttery hand-made pretzel from Hanover, New Hampshire. These are SO GOOD. One of my housemates was sent a huge bag of these, so expect more sightings in the future!

A few hours later I snacked on a banana (and a small square of chocolate which hid from the camera).

All of my floor went to the party, so I headed down there with some of the other assistants. The apartment it was held in was amazing: a New Yorker can only dream of having things like high ceilings, spacious bedrooms, a low-rise building, closet space… but it does happen from time to time, and one can always hope. While there, I had a glass of wine and a finger food-sized piece of spanikopita (which I must make soon; I always love it when I eat it).

When i got home, I made a very quick dinner that required zero thought and even less effort. I boiled some Trader Joe’s lobster ravioli, and just when the pasta finished cooking, threw in a handful of spinach to wilt in the same pot of water. After draining, I topped the whole thing with grated parmesan and tomato sauce. Easy peasy!

We had hopes of making it through Mystery Science Theater 3000: Santa Claus, but, although funny, I slept right through.

I’m going to another party tonight so there probably won’t be a new post until tomorrow. In the mean time, please tell me what you’re up to this weekend! I’m hoping to get some holiday baking and shopping in… would you believe that I haven’t gotten any of my gifts?

I’ve gotten several e-mails from readers who are unable to comment, load the site, or in worst cases, has had their computer crash while trying to read Lilveggiepatch. Ted Glass, the amazing web-designer responsible for everything from the layout to the wallpaper to the beautifully hand-drawn banner and icons, has been working to try and solve this problem. We now have only one post per page which I realize is not ideal, but may be easier on your systems. I’ve tried loading the site on three computers and have had success with this. Please let me know how it works for you!

*I got halfway through this post last night when Safari “unexpectedly quit”, deleting almost everything. Please excuse the tardiness!

This morning I woke up almost an hour before my alarm and couldn’t get back to sleep. Rather than stare at the ceiling until it was time to get up, I took my yoga mat downstairs to do a 20 minute Hip Opening Flow in my pyjamas. I haven’t done any exercise at all since my race; I’m hoping to have time to run again or go to the gym again this weekend. In the meantime, I’ll do yoga when I can. It was such a nice way to start the day: I felt calm, relaxed, and ready for it. The same way breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, I really believe that the tone you set in the morning- how you’re feeling, what you do- affects the rest of your day up until you go to sleep. How do you start your day on the right foot?

After my practice, I made a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal with a banana, pumpkin, cinnamon, agave and flaxy peanut butter.

Ari came to the rescue and got the top to my thermos unscrewed so I sailed smoothly through my busy morning on a steady stream of caffeine. I’m still learning the ropes at my job, and I’ll use whatever I ca as a safety net! Before I knew it, it was almost 12. I try to wait until at least 1:00 to take my lunch break, so I reached into my snack drawer for a mini Clif bar.

When I did finally break for lunch, I had leftover Thai at my desk. Thinking it would be easier to eat out of the containers, I removed the wire handles and reheated them that way (I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but DO NOT put metal in the microwave). The extra flaps ended up getting in the way every time I went in for a bite, and it was very awkward to eat!

I also had an apple and a honey-flavored Oikos Greek yogurt.

I worked through the rest of the afternoon, pausing only to nosh on clemmies…

… and a square of milk chocolate I was given by a staff member while waiting in line at J.Crew.

I left work at 5:30 to meet my friend Howard for a drink at The Modern, the swanky bar and restaurant that is run by MoMA. While the restaurant itself is very expensive, the drink and appetizer menu in the cocktail lounge is very reasonable. I had a glass of Victoria Pinot Gris, one of my favorite wine varietals.

Ari and I met up in the neighborhood and went home together. We puttered around in the kitchen for a while listening to music, and before I knew it it was 9:30 and I hadn’t eaten dinner yet! I’d somehow been preparing it for most of this time, but I guess I wasn’t quite as efficient as usual.

I had a Hugh Jass salad with spinach, red cabbage, roasted Brussels (molasses, olive oil, balsamic), carrots, and grilled tempeh (boiled first, then marinated and grilled with rice vinegar, soy sauce, agave and cayenne). I’d been planning this salad all week, and oddly enough Mama Pea had something similar herself!

This really was enormous. I’d been nibbling on Brussels sprouts all night and didn’t end up eating all of the ones in my dinner. I’ll go ahead spoil the surprise… I’m going to eat the same thing for lunch tomorrow.

I sipped on a mug of hot chocolate while watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. Every time I watch Charlie Brown, I love it more and more. Did I really watch this as a little kid?!

For some reason I’ve been waking up earlier and earlier each day… my body must finally be settling into the working woman’s groove I would like to get 8 hours of sleep every night, but that might be a little too optimistic. Anyway, I’m off to start the day. Have a great one!

Good evening, duckies! How are you this fine Monday? I’m feeling pretty darn fine myself, sipping tea in the comfort of my kitchen after a great day at work, a fabulous din with MVP (Mama), and a quick flash of friendly faces at home. What made you happy today?

Last night while I was working in the kitchen, I thankfully had the foresight to whip up enough oatmeal to last me the week. I had enough time to make steel-cut oats; it really only takes 25 minutes total, and it’s definitely worth the extra effort.

This morning I reheated a portion and topped it with warmed frozen berries, ground flax, agave and almonds. For some reason I prefer whole nuts to nut butters when I eat steel-cut oatmeal… it must be something about the nutty texture of the grains.

I said it a week ago and it still rings embarrassingly true: we need to go grocery shopping. However, while we don’t have a lot of fresh produce, we do have ingredients that, with a little creativity, can make up a pretty good meal.

When I was living in France, I noticed that a lot of people had lentil salads for lunch or to supplement their dinners. Lentils are high in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Lunch-Break Protein Salad

3/4 cup canned lentils

1/3 cup frozen edamame, thawed

1 tbsp crumbled feta

1/2 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp vinegar

crushed walnuts

Gently stir ingredients together. Serves 1.

This lentil-edamame salad was all made with ingredients that had been sitting in my fridge, pantry or freezer for at least a month. I should shop here more often! I also brought carrots, hummus, and a honey-flavored Oikos Greek yogurt with me.

Today was my first day at work on my own, without being trained or supervised. It was a little overwhelming, but a lot of fun. There’s a lot of information being thrown at me, but I’m taking lots of notes, asking questions, and doing my best.

New York has a lot of hidden gems, many of which are public parks like this one. Surrounded by office building, they have waterfalls that drown out traffic and city noise, open plazas and cafe tables for socializing, and trees to bring a little zen into your day. I spent my lunch in on of these parks today to clear my mind and recharge.

When I got back to the office, I quickly realized one of the keys to a successful work day: a strong cup of coffee between 2:30 and 3. I already have pretty low energy (which I’ve discussed here several times), and this little jolt of java really helped keep me going. Whatever it takes!

Throughout the day I also snacked on a Raisin Spice Heart Thrive Cake…

… and before I knew it, it was 5:45 and time to go home! On my way out the door, I opened up a can of coconut water to hold myself through dinner.

I met my mom for dinner at our usual Japanese restaurant.

We toasted the future with hot sake…

… and shared some steamed shrimp shumai.

Anticipating lunch tomorrow, I ordered a bowl of tofu nabe (broth with vegetables, tofu, and seasoning). I ate most of the vegetables but packed up a lot of the broth, which I will beef up and bring to work tomorrow.

When I got home, I cozied up with a mug of Gingerbread Spice tea and a sugar cookie my mom brought all the way back from Santa Fe! The cookie did not last long

My knee is still hurting from the 15K yesterday, but the official times were finally listed! I came in at 1:33:26. Not any kind of rank, but I’m still just proud I finished

It’s past my bedtime. Goodnight!

Good evening, Upper East Siders! How are you? I’m taking a little work break to blog and catch up on my Gossip.

Last night, after we got back from the wedding, I hunkered down to do some reading and prepare for my interviews. All of that brain stimulation must have shot my metabolism into overdrive, because only a couples hours after dinner, my tum was a-grumblin’ something fierce! I thought I might just be thirsty, but that didn’t seem to be it. Finally, I put down my book and headed into the kitchen to make a bowl of Kashi GoLean and Smart Start. Problem solved!

This morning, I woke up bright and early to see Ari off. As I mentioned, he’s going Vigilante through December, and had to leave at 7:30 this morning. I tried to go back to sleep, but my mind was already up and ready to go. I had to be at physical therapy at 10 anyway, so I just got up and made breakfast.

Taking Jess‘s advice, I heated up half of a Trader Joe’s Berry Mango Bran Muffin, crumbled it up, and tossed in on top of 0% Fage with some warmed frozen berries and a scoop of flaxy PB. I really like this peanut butter, by the way. It’s both crackly and crunchy and adds great texture!

Quite the mess!

My therapy session went well… I still have a lot of tightness in pretty much each muscle in my legs, so I have to keep working on that. Repeat after me: yoga, rolling and stretching, okay! When I got back, I briefly chatted with the guest who is staying with us, made myself an apple-cinnamon snack, and retreated to my room to be interviewed (via phone) with the HR department for the company I’m interviewing with.

It shaped up to be one of those days where I was constantly hungry, so I made something as soon as the clock showed that it was even remotely close to lunchtime. Ellie reminded me yesterday about the beauty of the crack wrap, so I made one with a whole wheat wrap, three-layer hummus, and a slice of Jarlsberg cheese.

I ate it with half a can of Progresso’s Fat Free Lentil soup. This isn’t the tastiest of the canned variety, but I had a hankering for soup. I’ll definitely be making my own in the near future!

Finished up the meal with a piece of salt water taffy for a sweet end.

I’ve been searching in vain for the seasonal Celestial Seasonings teas (like Sugar Cookie and Gingerbread)… any New Yorkers know where I can track it down? I settled on a cup of Sweet Coconut Thai Chai, which was a good substitute…

…but it knocked me right out! Ari caught me snoozing at 5PM when he woke me up with a phone call. Whoops! I snacked on some carrots to perk me back up…

… then did Yoga Download‘s Hip Opening Flow #2. I have trouble practicing yoga for more than 20 minutes when I’m not in class… does anyone have tips for staying in the moment? Turning off my phone would probably be a good start!

I heated up some leftover Coconut Barley Pilaf and made a quick salad with kale, broccoli slaw, grape tomatoes, sesame oil and rice wine vinegar.

Honestly, as much as I love my fancy salad dressings, I could probably make a sesame vinaigrette every night and be happy. It’s simple, but so delicious. I don’t even use measurements or mix anything together… the vinegar and oil just get drizzled on.

I made another quick dessert, starting with a tri-flavored chocolate sauce using Pure Dark cardamom chocolate, semisweet and bittersweet chocolate chips.

I added a few drops of water, microwaved the bowl for 35 seconds, then mixed in some Brown Sugar ice cream.

And thus concludes another day’s passing without having spent a single extra dollar on food. I’m going to have to buy some fresh produce soon, as we’re running low on fruit and vegetables, but otherwise the kitchen is pretty stocked. It’s a satisfying feeling.

Back to work… it’s going to be a late night. Bonne nuit

Good evening and happy Sunday! How was your weekend? I just got back from Westbrook, Connecticut, where The Upwelling’s former tour manager got married. The boys were part of the wedding party so they came back from tour and we all went together.

While this is going to be more of a “greatest hits” post, I want to share a new dressing with you: coconut mint.

Coconut Mint Dressing

1/2 tsp shredded unsweetened coconut

1 small handful fresh mint, chopped

juice of 1/2 lemon

2 tbsp rice vinegar

1 tbsp olive oil

“Muddle” the mint, coconut and lemon together before adding the rest of the juices. This releases the flavors and lets them really pop! I drizzled the dressing over a tempeh/sweet potato/apple/feta salad…

… but it would make a great marinade for fish, shrimp, or tofu as well. I’m getting so much mileage out of this bunch of mint!

In the car, I had the healthiest and most delicious “candy bar” imaginable: dried fruit stuffed with roasted almonds and bittersweet chocolate chips. These are so good.

Ari bought me a slightly more processed version, but still a favorite nonetheless. There’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s.

When we got to the hotel, I took advantage of the time the groomsmen spent rehearsing to go to the gym. I ran 3.1 miles (5K), walked another .4, and stretched. As the Gina always says, no one wants to miss out on the fun, so I try to plan timely activities (like workouts and… ahem… the time I spend getting ready to go out) while everyone else is either sleeping or doing something else.

The bride and groom are both Jewish, and because the rehearsal dinner fell on Friday, we had a traditional Shabbat dinner. The challah abounded! Somehow I ended up with three pieces of bread on my plate, but Josh and Ari picked at most of it.

The entrée choices were Vegetable Risotto with Arugula Pesto or Cappelini Rustica; I wasn’t sure which (if any) option was vegetarian, but figured the risotto was a safer bet. They both turned out to be meat free, and I loved the risotto! It was very rich, though, so I only ate about half of it. And the flower. Which I’m pretty sure wasn’t of the edible variety. Whoops!

Strawberry sorbet for dessert…

… and a fun-size Cookies ‘n Cream Hershey’s bar. This is one of those weird LVP-isms; I really don’t like white chocolate, but a couple times a year I get cravings that can only be quenched by this particular bar. The bride and groom must have known this when they stuffed it in our goodie bag!

Also in the bag were these personalized M&Ms; they had the wedding date, photo, names and words printed on them. Very creative!

We may or may not have gone to a casino late that night (this girl’s first time) to further my blackjack education and lose $5 on the slots. It was a strange, strange place, I tell ya! It was HUGE, and the lights are pretty dim and there aren’t any windows so there’s really no way to tell if it’s 4PM or 4AM. Drinks are free, and you can walk everywhere with them! People also smoked inside; it’s strange that a few years ago that was the norm everywhere. The stores were opened past midnight, so Ari and I split a Godiva pumpkin truffle.

We got to the hotel really late, and with the exception of Stew, all slept in past noon. We woke up famished, so we set out in search of brunch. Where did our journey take us, you ask? To the Grand Slam at Denny’s. Yes, you read that correctly.

The Grand Slam is a magical deal that lets you pick four breakfast items for only $5.99. For an extra $.49 per item, you can choose from three “premium selections” like yogurt, granola or fruit. We were all very excited.

We placed our orders, then set to work. When was the last time you colored at an eatery?

Ari ordered a festive pot of peppermint tea (which came with an unsolicited squirt of peppermint syrup):

I drank my coffee black.

The food arrived: I ordered (dry) whole wheat pancakes, egg whites, oatmeal and a cup of fruit.

I ate all the fruit and eggs (which were buttery but delicious), half of the pancakes and left all of the oatmeal. Even had I not been an oatmeal snob, I don’t think anything else would have fit in my stomach.

Brunch understandably held me right up through the wedding, and left me with more than enough time to shower, dress (Hollywood Tape did not come through for me as I’d hoped)…

… and watch three hours worth of Married With Children episodes.

The ceremony was beautiful, and while it was traditional in some respects, there were some nice personal touches: the groomsmen walked down the aisle to Semi-Charmed Life, the bridesmaids to Bittersweet Symphony, the bride to Do You Realize?, all performed by a string quartet. There may have been some tears in my corner.

At the dinner reception, the guest seated to my right taught me a helpful trick to remembering where your bread and drinks go in relation to your place setting.

Make the “OK” signal with both of your hands. Your left forms a lower-case “B” (for bread), and the right forms a “D” (for drink). How handy!

Speaking of bread, this roll was particularly tasty…

… and where drinks are concerned, I stuck to vodka- sodas.

While we were eating our smoked mozzarella and pesto ravioli appetizer, Josh and Ari played an acoustic version of A-Ha’s “Take On Me” for the bride and groom’s first dance. This was really good, but I let it get cold and only had a few bites.

I didn’t leave a scrap of arugula salad with toasted walnuts, shaved parmesan, and mandarin oranges, however. The couple next to me thought it was too big, but I would have gladly alleviated them of their portion! This was my favorite part of the meal.

The entree was grilled salmon with mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots. It was good, but I was pretty full by the time this came around and only ate about half of the fish (but all of the veggies!) and gave my taters to Ari.

We danced around on the floor for a bit, but really just enjoyed being with friends and each other. The band is booked through February with a short break in December, so it was nice to be able to spend the weekend together.

The cake was sliced and brought around: chocolate with strawberry and vanilla buttercream. I ate about half, then went back out to tear up the rug.

Our eyelids started drooping around midnight, and we were asleep by 1. We had to hustle in the morning to get back to the city, but we had enough time to have a nice brunch with the wedding party. I had half of a sesame bagel with cream cheese, eggs, fruit (plus some unpictured grapes), and half a slice of French toast. Coffee abounded, as usual.

It was such a nice weekend. I really cannot express how grateful I am to have been able to spend a weekend- more like a mini-vacation, actually- with people I love. The next few days will be pretty busy… The Upwelling goes back on tour tomorrow, and I have a couple interviews for potential jobs. My healthy habits have been slacking a bit, but one month from this morning (Sunday, December 13) is my 15K race. I’ve updated my training plan, and will stick to it… I went on a 4.5 mile run late this afternoon.

Regular posting will resume tomorrow. I hope you had a fabulous weekend, and congratulations to the newlyweds!

Hey there! How was your Tuesday? Mine began in a hurry and ended with ice cream, and now I’m in bed watching Michael Clayton. Ari’s leaving tomorrow to go Vigilante and we’ve all got things to do, so this is going to be a quickie!

Yesterday started off on a good note with a generous portion of Oats In A Jar.

In the mix:

PB jar w/ about 1 T PB

1/2 cup oats

1/2 cup skim milk

2 dried apricots

1 dried fig

dried cherries

Mighty fine, I tell ya. I should finish jars of nut butter every day!

After breakfast, I hustled over to Starbucsk to get some work done. I sipped on a Grande Skim Misto with a shot of espresso for a few hours…

… and spaced my lunch out over about four hours to maximize my efficiency. Every 100 pages, for example, I could eat another part of my meal. It’s a pretty good trick! I had honeydew…

… samples of marble cake and hazelnut-espresso truffle drink (too sweet for me)…

…mixed greens with fake chicken nuggets…

TJ’s plain nonfat Greek yogurt with YouBars‘ Chocolate Peanut trail mix…

… rebel carrots…

… and a grapefruit. When I was really young I used to snack throughout the day rather than have square meals, and there’s something to be said for this! It works nicely when I’m trying to be productive, but I think I prefer eating three times a day, plus snacks. Do you eat three meals or snack throughout the day?

Dinner was a really, really big salad. I love these! I eat almost an entire head of romaine or bag of spinach at a time.

In the mix:

1 handful spinach

4 romaine leaves

1 sweet potato

1 Gala apple

1 TJ’s frozen salmon patty

dulse flakes

cilantro-chili vinaigrette

I overdid it on dessert a little bit… I just kept going back for more Edgies! My tum was a little unhappy with me when I went to bed, but I’m pretty sure the brownies were worth it

I thought I was going to wait until tomorrow to share this with you, but today my physical therapist gave me the okay to run. With the exception of the two minutes I ran on the treadmill during my first therapy session, I haven’t really run since I hurt my knee during my 10K race. My therapist only let me run for 15 minutes, but it felt great! I didn’t feel any pain in my knee, and felt proud that I had followed the doctor’s and therapist’s orders to stay off my legs until the time was right. But baby, I’m back!

What made you proud today?

Good evening and happy Monday! I hope the start to your week- and your November- is going swimmingly. It’s strange to think that another year is almost over already, and I feel like I only just graduated! I have two bits of news… one I’ll share now, and one that’s going to wait until the end of the post.

As you know, I’ve been devoting most of my time recently to researching and applying for jobs. I recently applied to an entry level job at Wine Spectator, and the editor who looked over my application noted, after browsing through the blog and reading my cover letter, noted that while I have a clear and definite passion for food, my interest has not been directed towards wine. While I may not get this particular job, I’ve decided that I do want to take a more active pursuit towards learning about wine. Wine has always been important to my family, but with the exception of knowing that Malbec is from Argentina, Vouvray is from the Loire Valley and 2007 was a good year for white, I know next to nothing. So I’ve decided to take a proactive approach! I’m going to take advantage of the free tastings that go on every day around the city, and I’ll do my best to have some inkling about the wine I pluck off the $10-and-under shelf at the liquor store. In the next few days, I’ll add a special tab on the blog devoted purely to vino in order to chronicle my progress. I don’t know where this will take me, but since I have a little more time on my hands due to unemployment, I’m excited to learn a useful skill and pursue a new hobby!

Anyway… let’s jump back a bit.

Yesterday I was awakened quite early as Ari left for a morning meeting. Musicians keep very strange hours, I tell ya! Since I was already up, I decided to make a breakfast cookie to plop in the fridge while I went back to sleep for a few hours.

Jim was made of:

1/3 cup oats

1/2 banana

2 T skim milk

1/2 packet YouShake Vanilla Dream protein powder

1 t peanut butter

toppings: cinnamon, 2 prunes, 1 fig, 1 pecan

I also broke into my new McNulty’s Sumatra coffee to get my buzz on. And on and on.

Finally found a real solution to the Ester-C problem… POM Wonderful‘s Pomegranate Nectarine juice (which the company sent to me a few weeks ago) is sweet enough to completely mask the taste! I simply dissolved 1/3 teaspoon of Ester-C into 1/4 cup of juice and gulped it down as fast as possible. All I was left with was a pleasant fruity taste!

After I finished up breakfast, I looked at the time, packed my gym bag and hustled out the door to make a 12:15 60 minute Pilates class in the city. I got there five minutes early and went into the studio with my jacket, bag and shoes still on so that I could reserve a spot on the floor. Class had already started! I was a little annoyed- I didn’t want to disrupt the class, but it was early! It was also pretty warm and really stuffy, and I thought about asking the instructor to turn off the heat. After ten minutes, we still hadn’t moved to the mat to work on our cores and instead seemed to be moving through a Vinyasa flow. I turned to the girl next to me and whispered, “This isn’t Pilates, is it?” She shook her head and whispered, “Nope, it’s hot yoga!” Oops. I really love Bikram, but had I known I would be taking the class I would have hydrated, brought water with me, and not just had half a pot of coffee! Still, I’m glad I stayed for the full 90 minutes, and even more glad that I didn’t pass out from dehydration!

When class was over, I went home to have lunch and get some work done. I was surprised with festive snail mail from my girlies, which brightened up my day.

I hadn’t brought any food with me, so I rooted around in the freezer to check out the pickings. Not bad! I found bulgur pilaf with mixed vegetables, to which I added raisins and cilantro:

I also found sweet potato soup with navy beans from the Moosewood Cookbook, which I also added cilantro, peanuts and raisins to.

I washed it all down with Natural-flavored Zevia:

Not bad for an improvised lunch!

A little later, I snacked on a Jonagold apple while I did some work.

I’m pretty sure Ari had dinner while it was still light out, so I made a big orange salad with cilantro-chili vinaigrette for myself.

In the mix:

two handfuls of spinach

1 sweet potato, microwaved and diced

1 orange

1 Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burger

shredded carrots

I made the cilantro-chili vinaigrette with:

1/2 T toasted sesame oil

1 T olive oil

2 Trice vinegar

1/2 t Sriracha sauce

1/2 T raw blue agave nectar

1 slice red onion

handful cilantro

1/2 t chili flakes

It was enjoyed with a bowl of leftover miso soup and Christina Yang.

For dessert, I had 1/2 each of a brownie and blondie Edgie.

We watched half of Good Bye Lenin! before tuckering out for the night. It’s been on my Netflix queue for years, but I’m really glad we finally saw it! Or, half of it at least

Onto the second bit of news! My dad called today with a proposition. He’ll be traveling to Russia in December for work and offered to take me with him. Let me think… yes!!! We’ll be in Moscow for four days, then we go to St. Petersburg for two. Not only do I get to spend some much-needed quality time with Daddy-O, but I’ll also get to see my Sarah!!! I can’t wait. Life is good!

Good morning and happy Thursday! It’s going to be a good day, I can just tell How has your week been going? What was the most surprising or thing that brought you the most happiness?

The rolled oats stash still hasn’t been replenished, and I haven’t gotten a new batch of steel-cut whipped up yet, so I had to think a little about what I wanted for breakfast yesterday. I opened the fridge, pulled out the almond butter, and…

Oh no! Take me to a Trader Joe’s and make no stops on the way! Well, I don’t know when I’m actually going to get to TJ’s, so I tried to leave a little nut butter on the sides to make oats-in-a-jar when the time is right. That wasn’t enough for breakfast, though, so I pulled out a sample of Sunbutter that I’ve had lying around for a few months.

When squeezed out, it looks likes this:

One Ezekiel English muffin half had almond butter and TJ’s pumpkin butter, the other Sunbutter and raspberry jam.

The Sunbutter definitely tastes like sunflower seeds. I think I still prefer almond and peanut butters, but this was a nice change. I don’t know if I would buy a whole jar of this, but if I had more travel packets I would use them for on-the-go snacking.

I took all of my new vitamins with breakfast (except the melatonin, which is only for when I really can’t sleep at night).

Unfortunately I didn’t read the label carefully when I was at the store and bought the powdered Ester-C (which aids iron absorption) instead of the capsule, which means I have to drink it. And let me tell you, this is one of the worst tastes I’ve ever known.

I worked and researched most of the morning, and broke for lunch around noon before I had to leave for physical therapy. I made a big salad through my session:

In the mix:

1/2 head of romaine

grape tomatoes

1 orange

leftover roasted Brussels sprouts

julienned carrots

Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burger

Trader Joe’s Three Layer Hummus

Cayenne pepper-spiked agave- cinnamon dressing

It was a big salad! I almost couldn’t finish it, but I’m not usually one to leave greens on my plate. I went into the city to get my H1N1 flu shot (seasonal flu shot has already sold out almost everywhere), then went across town to my physical therapy appointment. I was early, so I popped into Tasti to get a treat and read a little. I got a small cup of chocolate raspberry mousse:

My appointment went really well. I really like my therapist; she’s a former marathoner and current Half-Iron Man-er, and just seems to know what she’s doing (a welcome change). She worked with me for over an hour, and came to the same conclusion as the first PT: my muscles aren’t strong enough to support the kind of running I’m doing. If I want to be an endurance athlete and compete in races, my quads, glutes, calves, etc. have to be really strong. I need to work on strength moves, increasing my flexibility (stretching, rolling out with the foam roller) and core moves every day. My knees do point in (the first PT diagnosed me with “squinting patellae”) but strengthening my quadraceps will force them back into place. And the even better news? I can start back up again (slowly) in the next few days, and can run the 15K in December!!!

She asked if I’d be okay with running on the treadmill for a few minutes to analyze my gait, and you should have seen the way my eyes lit up. Running? Now? Even though I hate the treadmill, I felt like I was flying. I do pronate, and my hips do come out and come forward when they shouldn’t (which has caused tightness in my IT band that I didn’t even know about until she worked it through with her fingers), but it can all be corrected. Woohoo!!!! I’m going back today; she wants to see me twice a week for a month or so. Thank the lordy. If I had a job right now, I wouldn’t have this kind of flexibility!

On the ride home, I was hungry again so I snacked on a Trek Mix bar.

When I got home, I did some more searching and researching, and started to think about dinner. It was going to take a couple hours to make, so when Ari ordered sushi for himself and Josh I politely requested my very own sweet potato roll.

Seriously, I don’t know how I didn’t know about these until now. What would I do without Ilana and Ari? Amazing!

My own dinner was based on this recipe. When I went to the produce store, I found a squash I’d never seen before. It started with a G… Galaban? Galabaga? When I looked it up on this handy squash glossary, however, I discovered that it was one of the most popular squashes with bloggers: the kobucha!

These were sold already halved; each half was about 70 cents.

I changed the recipe a little bit; I halved the “pudding” recipe, only used egg whites (I don’t have whole eggs), didn’t use anise, and used red onions instead of scallions.

It took a long time to cook (about an hour and a half), but the results were worth it.

I ate one half of the squash and saved the rest for another day. It was really satisfying, and so good that I ended up eating the skin, too! Oops.

For dessert, I smeared a pumpkin bar with peanut butter. It wasn’t worth it: still tasted bad. Into the trash they go!

Ari and I took Carlye‘s suggestion and watched the pilot of Psych. We thought there would be a few more episodes on the first disc, but it was just the one! So off I go to the mailbox… must make sure there’s a Halloween movie here for Saturday!

Have a great day
