Looks like you guys really want to win some nut butter! Keep the entries coming; you have until tomorrow

Yesterday I was up at the crack of 4:50 to get my booty to the gym and log 7 miles before work. I popped an Aleve and grabbed two Clif Peanut Butter Shot Roks (the company sent these a while back) on the way out the door… I liked them! Not two “protein-y” and just hearty enough to satiate me at 5 AM.

Luckily I was so worried about hurting my knee that I didn’t find myself getting too bored on the treadmill.

Warm-up: 5.8 mph

Mile 2-5.5: 6.4 mph

Mile 5.5-6: 7.5 mph

Mile 6-7: 6.2, 5.8., 5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5

Total time: 1:07:55

I dropped my iPod twice while I was running, and the first time after I had to stop and retrieve it and then start up again it really hurt. It was pretty sore on the walk home, too, so while I ate breakfast, I iced.

Breakfast was the first breakfast cookie I’ve had in months!

This was a particularly good one.

1/3 cup oats

1/2 banana

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder

splash of skim milk

1 tsp Maranatha No Stir Creamy Peanut Butter

1 tsp chia seeds

toppings: goji berries, cinnamon, Greek yogurt, pumpkin, dried fig, agave

As soon as I got to work, I go an ice pack out of the freezer and kept it on my knee for most of the day.

Despite my long run, breakfast held me over really well! I only needed an orange to hold me until lunch (I ate the apple later in the afternoon).

For lunch I had leftover Chopped Coconut Miso Salad and Everything Pretzel Crisps.

One of our coworkers thought Danielle and I were sisters… I don’t really see the resemblance, do you?

In addition to the apple, I also had a Caramel Chocolate Forze Bar in the afternoon.

After work I went to a networking happy hour (hello, $4 Absolut cocktails!) then came home to a delicious meal grace à Daddy-O: sautéed broccoli rabe, roasted tomatoes, octopus braised in red wine, and brown rice.

I also had a small bowl of mushroom and wild rice soup.

For dessert I had a bowl of Ciao Bella’s Blackberry Cabernet sorbet with chocolate sauce… somehow it was a little camera shy Before I got into bed, I took one of my coworker’s suggestions (she’s run three half-marathons) and took a warm bath, then rolled out both IT Bands and glute muscles. My calves are pretty sore today and I have a feeling my knee isn’t going to be much better. I’m instating a “no running until Sunday” rule.

Off to go walk the pooch and get ready for the day. Have a great weekend!

Hey there, chickadees. Talk about a humpday! I didn’t even realize it was Wednesday until it was almost 5:00… this week is going by so slowly. It must be an after-effect of the holidays, but seriously!

Last night I made a breakfast cookie for this morning using chia seeds! I figured they’d have time to plump up and turn into the “gel” if they soaked over night.

In the cookie:

1/3 cup oats

1/2 banana

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder

big splash of skim milk

1 tsp almond butter

toppings: cinnamon, 1 almond nose, 2 prune eyes, goji berry smile (makes Jim look a little bit creepy!)

I made Ari one, too, but added more oats and left out the chia. (He must not have been feeling this particular mixture; there were only two little spoonfuls missing when I got home from work.)

I thought I took my time to get ready this morning, but when I got to work I realized that while I’d thought I’d applied brown eyeliner, it had really been purple! Whoopsies. But hey, why not pretend you’re at the club when it’s 9 AM on a Wednesday? Spice up your day!

Around 11, I snacked on a tangerine (and ate another one at 3).

For lunch, I had the last of the Tomatoey Spiced Chickpeas with mixed greens and pita bread. I actually ate with my coworkers and not at my desk, but since I’m still new I didn’t want to explain the blog to a big group of people all at once (although some do know).

At 4:30, as the work day was coming to a close, I had half of a Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch Clif Bar. I really wasn’t all that hungry, I just wanted something to chew on.

When I got home, the band was packing up and getting ready to leave for tour. I helped load the van (no need to strength train when you date a musician… music gear is heavy!) then made dinner. I’ve been wanting to make Heidi Swanson’s Sushi Bowl for ages, and I did! I made a few adjustments for time and taste, starting with substituting her tofu for Gliding Calm’s. I also added sesame seeds to the marinade.

Instead of cooking a new batch of rice, I used up the last of the Harvest Grains blend. This is a keeper! You don’t even really need to use the recipe (although the dressing is mighty fine).

I sipped a glass of The Big Red Monster wine with dinner… the beast was unleashed.

Anticipating the next month’s Arilessness, I made myself a huge bowl of Coconut Bliss ice cream (Mint Galactica, Naked Coconut, Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge) with homemade chocolate sauce (two kinds of melted chocolate chips + water).

You can bet you’ll see a lot of that in the next few weeks. I miss my boy already.

Evening and happy Sunday! I hope you’ve all had wonderful weekends, whether you celebrated the holidays or simply enjoyed the days.

My Saturday was quite festive, starting with a morning spent at the soup kitchen. I haven’t been able to go as much as I would have liked in the past few months, but it was so nice to be back there again. There were many “regulars” I’ve known for almost 10 years!

After volunteering, my parents and I went to Peacefood Café for lunch.

This was their first time at an all-vegan restaurant. I really appreciate how supportive my family has been of my diet!

We ordered an appetizer to split: vegetable tamale with jalepeño and tomatoes.

The last time I ate at Peacewood, I enjoyed Caitlin‘s sandwich so much that I had to order it! My dad and I split the Roasted Japanese Pumpkin Sandwich with mashed and seasoned with a little sea salt, ground black pepper and extra virgin olive oil, topped with caramelized onions, ground walnuts, vegan goat cheese and seasonal greens. It was even better than I remembered!

We also shared the Pan-Seared French Horn Mushroom Panini with sun-dried tomatoes, arugula, artichoke aioli, mint & basil pesto. It was good, but we both agreed the pumpkin was the best.

My mom ordered the special of the day: Kidney Bean Chili with rice, mixed greens and homemade cornbread. This wasn’t her favorite; I loved it, however, and was the lucky recipient of the leftovers.

It was only my second time at Peacewood Café, but it’s already become one of my favorite restaurants on the Upper West Side. There are tasty, healthy options that carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, raw foodists and foodies alike can enjoy!

Last night when I got home I was quite the domestic goddess. I set to work in the kitchen, making Gena’s Cashew Cheese with Meyer Lemon and Dried Cherries.

I enjoyed it today with a Gala apple, whole wheat and flax pita bread, and tabbouleh. Delicious!

It was a cold and rainy day; I wanted to have a cozy and comforting dinner and came up with this soup.

Miso Soup with Salmon and Soba

Serves 2-3

I used salmon in this soup, but feel free to substitute any other protein source such as tofu, seitan, soft-boiled egg or whatever you choose.

4 oz soba noodles

4 tablespoons white miso paste

2 cups roughly torn broccoli florets (about 1/2 large bunch)

1/2 inch fresh ginger, thinly sliced

3 scallions (green onions), thinly sliced

soy sauce

salmon or protein of choice, such as fresh tofu, soft-boiled egg, or seitan

optional: Sriracha sauce

Cook noodles according to package directions. I used a package of green tea soba that I received from Asian Food Grocer, a Foodbuzz affiliate.

Drain and rinse with cold water; set aside. Bring 4 cups water to a boil. Add ginger and miso, stirring until miso is dissolved.

Add broccoli and scallions (reserving some for garnish), cooking until broccoli is crisp-tender. Remove from heat.

Stir in soba and divide into bowls. Top with salmon (grilled, poached, etc. to your liking), drizzle with soy sauce and Sriracha (if using) and serve!

After dinner, I spent the rest of the night on my hands and knees… scrubbing the floors! Since starting my job, I’ve been slacking a bit in the cleaning department, so I made up for it by sweeping, polishing, dusting and wiping into the wee hours of the morning. I felt a bit like Kath! It was actually pretty satisfying, and got my heart rate right up.

Now Ari and I are relaxing in bed, watching Gone With The Wind and sipping “The Big Red Monster”, a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel and Petit Sirah.

What was the best part of your weekend? Did you lay low or were you busy?

Don’t forget to send me your questions!

Have a great night!

Evening! Hope you had a slam-dunk kind of day. Mine was long and full, and I am more than ready to curl up and relax for the night!

This morning I took a break from oatmeal and made Sarah’s pumpkin cakes. Instead of adding sweetener and spices, I used a scoop of pumpkin butter!

I topped the “cake” with a generous portion of plain Chobani and a scoop each of lemon curd and flaxy peanut butter. Delicious combination! Just like Lemon Meringue Pumpkin Pie.

The subways were running smoothly and I got off the train with enough time to stop by my mom’s hair salon to say hello. It was a nice way to start the day!

I worked all through the morning, breaking only to unwrap my Raisin Spice Heart Thrive cake.

I decided to take my lunch at my desk and catch up on some emails. While it’s cold outside, I have a feeling I’ll do this a lot!

I had leftover tofu nabe and rice and a cup of Stonyfield Chocolate Underground yogurt. Saved the apple for my afternoon snack Last night, I put a handful of frozen shrimp into a Ziplock bag and refrigerated it. By the time lunchtime rolled around, it was ready to eat!

It made a great addition to my soup!

Remember my new trick of drinking coffee in the early afternoon? Well, today we were out of cups! I’d brought my coffee to work this morning as well, but couldn’t get the top of the thermos off. So, this girl was running on ZERO caffeine! Not ideal.

I had to stop by HR today, and while there took a Mary-Jane to spike my energy. (That egg-shaped thing is my new Eos chapstick… isn’t it cute? It moisturizes pretty well, too!)

There was a minor crisis as I was getting ready to leave the office, but we solved it and left by 5:30. It was a rare night when Ari was free for dinner, so we went out for Thai. We shared an order shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer… I don’t usually like fried spring rolls, but these were actually pretty good.

For my entrée, I ordered the “Healthy Ginger”: vegetables and shrimp sautéed in a fresh ginger sauce. I half with brown rice, and packed up the rest to take home. This was my third time having shrimp in one day! Wonder if I could get a job at Bubba Gump?

Ari was happy with his dinner, too… he usually gets Pad See Ew.

I had a dessert plate (dried prunes, figs, almond butter and chocolate) while Ari did a little more work. I missed these. They always hit the spot!

Off to bed! There is a teensy chance I’ll get up and run in the morning, but it’s pretty unlikely. I can’t wait until I’m a little more settled into work and can figure out how I’m going to manage my exercise routine… I need those endorphins! Any tips?

Have a great night

Evening! How was your day? Mine was just fine, but I’m ready to crawl into bed and call it a night!

This morning when I woke up at 8:30, I panicked for a few minutes before remembering that my boss (at my internship) had canceled work for the day. I was up and ready to go, though, which things to do and people to see!

I was excited to try these goji berries with my breakfast. I’ve only ever tasted these chopped up and mixed into other things, but when I snatched them right up when I spotted this bag on sale for $2.19 at the food co-op this weekend (they’re usually almost triple that price). Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, and among their many benefits they are touted to improve eyesight (they’re rich in beta carotene), boost immunity, and spice up your sex life

I tossed them in with Greek yogurt, 1/2 toasted Trader Joe’s Berry Mango muffin, warmed frozen berries and flaxy peanut butter. The goji berries are firm but chewy; the texture really complemented the rest of the mess.

This held me over for a really long time. The rest of the morning was spent reading, researching, and waiting until I was digested enough to go for a run. I warmed up with a 20 minute hip opening flow, then set out for an easy 2 mile run.

Total distance: 2 miles

Total time: 20:09

Most of my runs are going to have to be in the morning now that it’s getting dark earlier; I’ll have to crank out some long runs on the treadmill when I’m in Russia, however. I’m a little nervous that I won’t be able (psychologically) to run 7 miles on a treadmill…. What are you tips for making it through a long treadmill session?

Lunch was pretty basic (and very green): the last of the spinach and rice soup and a crunchy salad (spinach, broccoli slaw, celery, roasted almonds; sesame oil/rice vinegar/sesame seed dressing).

My interview was at 3:30; when it was over I hopped right back onto the subway and headed home. I had 1/3 of a Key Lime Pie Larabar on the ride back:

I found myself in one of the rare instances when I didn’t have anything to read on the subway… it was completely disorienting. I always have a book with me (sometimes two!); I would have brought one to prom if it had fit in my clutch! Ari calls me his word nerd.

When I got home, I went straight to the kitchen to unwind and get dinner started. I’ve had my eye on Martha Stewart‘s recipe for Roasted Cauliflower with Pasta and Lemon Zest (in the November 2009 issue) for quite some time… a little too much time, because the head of cauliflower I’d bought in anticipation a couple weeks ago had started to mold. But have no fear! I just sliced off the offending areas. I’m frugal, what can I say?

While slicing onion, I remembered what one of my cooking teachers always said: always cut out the middle greenish part of an onion. I can’t quite remember why that is; I think it has something to do with it not being fully developed yet and causing stomachaches.

I was eager to try out this pasta… Nature’s Place is Hannaford grocery store’s natural, minimally processed brand. Fresh (not dried) pasta always tastes so much better to me.

Plus, they look like little nests! Two “nests” make one serving.

When the veggies finished roasting (perfectly crispy!), it was all I could do to keep myself from eating them all right off the baking sheet. I’d already made quite a dent in the cauliflower while I was chopping it… if I wasn’t careful, I wouldn’t have any ingredients left for dinner!

I tossed the roasted cauliflower with the pasta and added lemon zest, fresh parsley, and a drizzle of olive oil.

When it comes to parsley and other fresh herbs, I’m of the “more is more” mindset.

Lest you think this was a dainty, “ladylike” portion…

I had enough fuel to run a marathon with this baby. Come November 6, you just might find me eating it!

There wasn’t too much room in my tum for dessert, but in the words of Tim Gunn, I made it work. Dried figs and prunes stuffed with dark chocolate chips are so good… and they just keep me going back for more. They kind of look like frogs, right? I seem to have successfully eaten nuts in some form or other for every meal and snack today.

I’m off to seal my day with a lunar flow practice and hope to be in bed by 10. I’ll make it work.

Bonne nuit

Edited to add: Kristina from Stonyfield Farm wants me to let you all know about a fun “Greek” opportunity!

“When consumers buy our quarts instead of single-serving cups, they pay less for their yogurt, but we know that a quart is not as convenient as single-serving cups for on the go consumption,” says our President and CE-Yo Gary HIrshberg. “The reusable yogurt cup gives our quart buyers the convenience of the Stonyfield 6 oz cups by providing a way to create easily transportable single servings for anywhere, anytime.”

Yogurt lovers just have to buy four Stonyfield yogurt quarts through December, and mail in the foil lids (describing this offer), and they’ll receive the reusable, eight-ounce yogurt cup made by Preserve®. Made from 100% recycled plastic, the cup is perfect for yogurt-lovers on the go, the ideal size for breakfast or a snack, with room to stir in fruit or granola. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA-free with a screw-on lid – and it’s made in the US.

Consumers will also get $4.50 worth of Stonyfield and Preserve coupons along with the cup.

Our recycling partner since 2000, Preserve uses innovative methods to turn used materials (including used Stonyfield yogurt cups) into stylish, useful household products like toothbrushes, colanders, cutting boards and tableware. Preserve products are 100% recycled and recyclable too.

Consumers can mail clean foil lids, with name, address and phone number on an index card or 4” x 6” sheet of paper by February 28, 2010 to:

Stonyfield Farm

Are you an “all or nothing” type of person? My body seems to be. My internal clock is so out of whack right now! For the past week, I’ve alternated between going to bed early and getting more than a full night’s sleep (10+ hours) and getting less than 6 and feeling completely wiped. This morning was the latter. Last night, even though I was exhausted, I could not get myself to drift off. I knew I had to get up early to get ready for an interview, and the pressure of knowing I needed to sleep only made it worse. I dragged myself out of bed, bleary and blurry eyed (I’m blind as a bat), not even stopping to put on my glasses. I had one mission, and one mission only.

Our house guest left this as a parting gift when he left. I’m sure it’s delicious, but I really didn’t pause to smell or taste it before throwing it back. I’ll let you know about that tomorrow

I replenished my supply of POMx to dissolve my Ester-C into. I’m still so proud of myself for discovering this works! (For new readers: I drink a little bit every day with breakfast to dissolve Ester-C, which aids the absorption of an iron supplement I take for low energy, but don’t photograph it every morning.)

I was excited to try out a new product with breakfast: Stonewall Kitchen’s Lemon Curd. I’ve been curious about this for years, and my mom was nice enough to buy it for me this weekend.

Breakfast was a double portion of Sarah‘s pumpkin “cakes”, topped with a heaping cloud of 0% Fage, cinnamon, walnuts, and a scoop of lemon curd. Lemon Meringue Pumpkin Pie before 7 AM? Yes, please!

I had two back-to-back interviews starting at 9 (which I think went well); afterward I needed to unwind a little with some teasing retail therapy (AKA touch everything, buy nothing) at J.Crew and Anthropologie. How is it that a store (or two) can be filled with only perfect things? But my bank balance remained stable, and I left satisfied with the clothes on my back.

The tree is going up in Rockefeller Center…

I sat in the plaza and ate my Criterion apple. Sometimes it’s okay to be a tourist in your own city.

After making sure there were no more stores I needed to browse through, I came home to get some done and eat lunch. I heated up a bowl of Spinach & Rice soup and added lots of fresh parsley, and served it alongside a small sweet potato with brown sugar and cinnamon. Perfect mid-Monday comfort food, if you ask me.

I thought I deserved a treat, so I had some 55% Dark Chocolate Peppermint Chococolove.

The rest of the afternoon was spent writing. Welcome to my “office”! You may recognize it as the kitchen table, but during the day I spread out and use it for reading, writing, researching, and tea-drinking. I tried the Sugar Plum Spice holiday tea… so good. I think this might have been the first flavor they came up with, because I remember having it a long, long time ago before they changed their packaging.

After successfully moving to decaffeinated tea, I didn’t want to go back to drinking coffee so late in the day. Instead, I moved on to a cup of Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride. I don’t know how they do it, but this smells so much like a cookie! It’s very vanilla-y, but it has a very soft taste without a hint of bitterness.

I finished up my work, then went into the city to meet my friend Ilena at 5:30 for an early dinner at FreeFoods NYC.

Tonight was another example of how many secrets this city has to offer, both food-wise and other. I never would have suspected that a restaurant like this could exist (and thrive!) in Midtown Manhattan, in the heart of corporate offices and tourist attractions. Was I wrong! It goes to show that people do want to eat locally and sustainably, the options just have to be made available.

FreeFoods serves fresh soups, sandwiches and salads; they have raw, vegan and gluten-free options.

I built my own salad with arugula, avocado, spiced mango, shittake mushrooms, spicy shrimp and Manchego cheese with Thai basil dressing.

One of the staff members had made an extra Vitality Berry smoothie (sweet cherry, açai, blueberry- pomegranate juice, ginger-agave), so Ilena and I split it with our dinners. It was really good, and helped ease the heat in my mouth leftover from my spicy salad dressing!

Ilena and I sat for a while catching up…

…and were treated to another smoothie sample! This time we tried the “orange creamsicle” (it’s new, and the ingredients aren’t listed). As Ilena said, it really did taste like a creamsicle, “but not in the bad way”!

Since we dined early, I was back home by 7:30 to get some things done before Gossip Girl. Sadly, it seems like most TV shows have already had their holiday finales, so I did some more work instead. I did, however, make a fabulous dessert to fill my Chuck Bass-sized void…

My dad found a great deal on takeout containers of Tasti D-Lite, so he picked me up some peanut butter frozen yogurt. I added frozen berries and Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter.

Hey there, strangers! How was your weekend? Mine was lovely… I spent the last few days relaxing in upstate New York with my parents. Time seems to move slower there; I never felt like I was rushing to catch my breath or finish five things at once. It was a nice change. What did you do?

Here’s a quick re-cap of the weekend chez with Mom & Pop LVP, Do/Don’t style!

DO make Eggs In A Basket out of an open-face grilled cheese sandwich. Thanks for the idea, Kaytee!

DO enjoy pumpkin whole wheat pancakes on a frosty fall morning. The secret to their fluffiness? A little bit of vinegar.

DO support your local farmers and buy apples at the orchard…

…and while there, DO pick up an apple cider donut for your mama.

It will make her happy.

DO top your salads with Red Ants On A Log (celery with Sunbutter and dried cherries).

DON’T feel silly when you squeal with delight after finding holiday teas at your local food co-op, after searching every chain grocery store with no luck.

DON’T gloat about winning some fancy protein powder from your neighborhood Everythingtarian.

DO share Holly‘s pumpkin molasses cookies with those who gave you life… albeit grudgingly.

DO cozy up to a mug of Spiced POM Cider…

DO have a nice dinner at Church and Main, a sustainable restaurant that supports local farmers and uses only the freshest ingredients (and DO go home and watch Food, Inc. afterward).

Good evening and happy Tuesday! I hope you’ve had a fabulous, fabulous day. Mine’s been alright… no complaints here!

Yesterday I had an early-morning appointment with a new physical therapist (mine is in Orlando competing in a Half Ironman!), so, after flirting with snooze for as long as possible, I dragged myself out of bed. This was a little harder than usual, as I got less than five hours of sleep the night before. Ari was at the All-American Rejects show in Atlantic City the night before, and while I knew he’d be home late, was startled when I woke up at 3:30 and he wasn’t there. I couldn’t get him on the phone, and because I was still half-asleep, got myself so worked up thinking that something really awful had happened. He came home at 4 and all was fine, but I don’t know if I’ve ever been so worried. I can be a little silly sometimes

Anyway, breakfast was quick but delicious: Sarah‘s microwave pumpkin cake topped with raspberry yogurt and walnuts.

Speaking of pumpkins, our little fella has aged quite a bit since Halloween!

My PT session went well. My temporary therapist told me my muscles are still really tight… I need to be more aggressive with my foam roller and concentrate on the IT band. It hurts, but it’ll ease up as the muscle loosens. He also put me on a pilates machine for some quad work. I’ve only done mat pilates before, but this was fun! I definitely feel its work today.

I raced home to watch Heroes and get lunch with Ari. I suggested we go to a bagel place that also makes salads, but when we got there and I saw that their ingredients were no better than the ones I had at home (my rule when eating out is only to get something I can’t make at home) I changed my mind and ordered a toasted low-carb bagel with light cream cheese smoked salmon and tomato.

This was good, but so filling. I’ve never had a meal hold me over for 7+ hours before… note even Thanksgiving!

The rest of the afternoon was meant to be spent reading, but our room was so hot that I fell right asleep! It’s been unseasonably warm here for the past few days, and it was the same in Minnesota. Hmm…

While I was snoozing, Ari was out running errands, one of which was a trip to the bookstore. He got us both copies of The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain for us to do on our own and talk about while he’s on tour. How do you keep up with friends and loved ones when you’re separated geographically?

He also got me a surprise…

French Wine for Dummies (FWfD)! Just what I need to kick-start my wine education. What a nice boyfriend!

We decided to go on a quick run together before dinner; I didn’t want to run at night by myself, and to be honest I’ve been a bit apprehensive about running outside again. I haven’t had any pain at all in either of my legs for at least three weeks and have run on the treadmill twice since I was given the OK, but I just wanted some company! While we ran, Ari taught me the rules of blackjack. I was so engrossed in his casino tales that before I knew it, I was falling… and falling… and falling… it seemed to take a really long time for me to hit the ground, and Ari acted so quickly and caught me so that I only scraped my palms. I have never fallen while running before, and I shudder to think of what could have happened if he hadn’t been there… I don’t think I’d be able to handle another injury!

We both had more work to do before we were ready to relax, so I made us a quick and easy dinner: Tomatoey Spiced Chickpeas (which I’ve made before), brown rice and Japanese Cucumber Salad with Vinegar.

This chickpea recipe stood the test of time… Ari really liked it, and he’s a pretty tough judge. We both agreed the seaweed wasn’t quite right on the cukes; next time I think I’ll cut the pieces a bit smaller. A miso would probably taste good as well.

We had some De Loach Merlot, a 2006 Californian from the Russian River Valley that my friend Howard gave to me.

Although this isn’t a French wine, I consulted FWfD to learn a little about Merlot. I scanned the table of contents… nothing. I flipped to the back to search through the index… nothing again! No Merlot?! It’s a French word!…. Isn’t it? I flipped to the “Cheat Sheet” at the front of the book to see if anything even starting with “M” made an appearance, and lo and behold! Next to Bordeaux (red) (Wine Type) was an a list: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc (Principle Grape(s)). Merlot is a type of grape, and just one of several that falls under the category “Bordeaux.” It grows in the Haut-Médoc in Gironde, a region in the southwest of France that is located in the city of Bordeaux. The Merlot grape is the most commonly planted variety in Bordeaux (FWfD p. 36-38).

So what does this mean for California Merlots? According to the Wine Institute, Merlot grapes were brought to the United States in the mid-19th century, and are mainly used to blend and “soften” a more robust wine.

I’m typically more of a white wine drinker, but I want to broaden my horizons. This didn’t taste too strong to me, and it did feel sort of “soft” in my mouth, if that makes sense.

Ari’s take: Deliciousness in a sleek and spunky package. I was impressed by both the amount of flavornoids and antioxidants. And I was ready to party.

I was also ready to party… with the freezer. Häagen-Dazs sent me a coupon for a free pint to make up for their almond-less ice cream, so I picked up a container of their five-ingredient Brown Sugar ice cream.

It tasted so much like brown sugar! Which, I guess, is an acquired taste… straight sugar isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Ari wasn’t a fan, but I filled a bowl and topped it with Pure Dark chipotle chocolate.

We did a little more work, and spent the rest of the evening watching Heartburn. Has anyone seen this? It was made the year before I was born, and there were so many things I recognized (specific toys, accessories, my mother’s perm…). The film itself made me a little sad (Mike Nichols directed it), but I liked it a lot. What movie should I order from Netflix?

P.S. Holly’s giving away some supa-fancy protein powda!

Good morning and happy Friday! Are everyone’s Halloween plans cemented? I’d love to hear what you’re all doing! Dressing up? Going to a party? Last year my roommate and I had a party, and even though I hopped around on crutches the whole time, it was a lot of fun! The year before was my first year having real trick-or-treaters, and it was so much fun! I lived on “Halloween Street,” and over 700 kids came by that night. We had to make multiple trips to the grocery store, and even gave away some of our own treats! I grew up living in an apartment, and while some kids do go trick-or-treating in apartment buildings (I used to go to a really big building, and always came home with a lot of candy!), ours never had too many kids so no one came by.

Yesterday when I woke up I was craving cereal. Cold and filling, I made a big bowl with Kashi GoLean, Smart Start, granola, a banana, and skim milk.

I didn’t have too much time to waste in the morning because I had physical therapy at 1:30, but I got some things done. I broke for a quick and easy lunch: leftover Roasted Corn Pudding in Kabocha Squash, a grapefruit, and Trader Joe’s Nonfat Vanilla Greek Yogurt. It was a little random, but it hit the spot.

My appointment went well! Allison gave me a few exercises that I can do on my own while I’m in bed, and as a result, my side glutes have been so sore the past two days! The foam roller feels unbelievable. She wants me to wait until next week to try running; in the meantime I can use the elliptical (which I am brainwashing myself into “liking”). My next appointment isn’t until Tuesday, so I have some time to work on the moves.

I snacked on a Honey Cashew YouBar on the way to the gym from PT. There will be a formal review of these products coming in the next few days, but until then, you can use the code Lilveggiepatch for a 5% discount at checkout.

At the gym, I stretched, climbed onto the Cross Ramp, cranked up the Gaga, and pounded away for 30 minutes. I like the Cross Ramp more than the elliptical because, judging from the statistics on my heart rate monitor, it’s almost as “efficient” as running and about twice as efficient as the recumbent bike. I cheated a little and started my cool down after 27 minutes… it’s entirely psychological, but I really hate staying on that thing after my time is up! I went uptown, showered, and rolled out on my dad’s foam roller. I’m going to be near Paragon today so I’ll pick up my own; Allison wants me to use it not only to loosen my muscles but for balancing ab exercises.

I snacked on a Jonagold apple from the orchard upstate… I used the honeybear for scaling purposes. Hugely delicious!

My mom and I went to a reading last night at The Center for Fiction (formerly known as The Mercantile Library). It’s a really nice space; the first floor is a great bookstore, and the second houses a membership library and readings. If it wasn’t so out of the way, I would certainly join! I love going to the library; as soon as I finish the book I’m reading now, I’m going to check out some new titles at the NYPL. Now, if only there were a lending library for clothes…

My dad made us a delicious dinner last night based around salmon steaks he picked up at Bouley Market. The fish is the same that is served in his restaurants, but he sells it to go at a really great price. Good to know! Maybe I can upgrade from my Trader Joe’s frozen salmon patties…

We snacked on crudités…

And ate avocado halves with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, sea salt & pepper…

Cajun-rubbed salmon, steamed swiss chard & brown rice…

… and drank big mugs of milk.

We had a dessert tasting with LaLoo Black Mission Fig Goat Milk ice cream and Bouley‘s fresh Rhubarb Sorbet. They complemented each other perfectly.

When I got home, Ari and I watched part of I’m Not There. Has anyone else seen it? It came out while I was in France, and I’ve never seen the whole thing all the way through. A lot of my favorites starred in the film, which I’d support even if it weren’t about Bob Dylan.

Well, I’m off to squeeze in glute-rolling some gym time before I meet George for lunch. Have a great day!

Good morning, sunshines! It feels just like monsoon season over here… when I woke up yesterday it was raining, and it still is now! At least I’ve been getting better about bringing my umbrella (or parapluie, en français) so it’s actually been kind of nice. There’s something so pleasant about being indoors and cozy with the rain outside, don’t you think? When I was in fifth grade our teacher had us make a list of things that helped us write… “rain” was on there!

Yesterday I made another batch of Sarah‘s Microwave Pumpkin Pie… so, so good. I knew I probably wouldn’t be able to snack until lunch since I had to go to my internship, so I made it a little heartier with a container of Trader Joe’s Organic Nonfat Greek Yogurt, one whole Gala apple, and cinnamon.

I read some interesting things at work until lunchtime, when I met my mom at Pinto, a Thai restaurant that has a great prix-fixe. For $8, you get a salad, appetizer, and entrée. Pretty good price, especially for New York City!

We both warmed up with jasmine tea. It was served in a coffee press, which neither of us had ever seen used for tea before.

In addition to my salad (which came with a fabulous lemon dressing), I started with the tofu seaweed soup. I was surprised to find glass noodles at the bottom of the bowl!

My mom and I both selected the Thai Basil for our entrée.

Mine came with shrimp, hers with beef.

I had a couple bites of rice, but focused on the main event. I did a pretty good job on it!

After lunch my mom took me to buy some vitamins, then she went back to work and I walked across town to the gym. It wasn’t raining, but was very damp. The city is beautiful, but needs a little wringing out.

At the gym I biked for 30 minutes and did some ab work. I didn’t do the “cool down” today; I know I should, but it usually depends on how anxious I am to get off the machine. On Monday I was reading an interesting magazine, so I stayed on for 50 minutes. Do you stay for a cool down?

On the way out, I tore into the Jonagold apple my mom brought me from upstate. It was huge! I had to violate the “absolutely no photography” rule to show you how big it was.

When I got home I researched and applied to some temping agencies; hopefully I’ll hear something soon. Ari was working in the kitchen, so, friendly girlfriend that I am, I went out quite a bit to visit. That may have been more about the bag of pretzels that he had next to him, though…

I was on my own for dinner, which I made while catching up with some friends and enjoying some pinot noir. Recently, I’ve really been enjoying drinking cold red wine. Do you chill your red or keep it at room temperature?

I made a quick batch of roasted Brussels sprouts:

Basic Roasted Brussels Sprouts

1/2 pint Brussels sprouts, washed

2 T olive oil

salt

fresh cracked pepper

balsamic vinegar

Preheat oven to 450. Chop stems off Brussels sprouts, and cut in half, top-to-bottom. Combine olive oil, salt and pepper in the bottom of a glass baking dish. Add sprouts, and toss to coat evenly.

Put dish in oven and bake 20 minutes. The outer leaves should have begun to brown, but the rest should be bright green.

Drizzle a little balsamic vinegar over the sprouts. Less is more, so start with about 1 tablespoon and add additional balsamic if desired.

I combined the sprouts with spinach, steamed green beans, grape tomatoes, julienned carrots and TJ’s Meatless Meatballs, and made a simple EVOO/balsamic/mustard vinaigrette.

FYI: I eat my salads out of a 3 quart Pyrex baking dish! No ordinary bowl can handle these beasts

For dessert, I finished up the Light Phish Food and mixed in a teaspoon of Nutella. Mmm.

When Ari came home, we watched It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which I hadn’t seen in years. I haven’t laughed so hard at a non-Hangover-style in a while. Thank you, Charlie Brown.
