In favor of extra sleep, I postponed the two miles I was supposed to run yesterday and ran them this morning instead. This was the first real run since Thursday- I’m not counting that one mile blip on Sunday- and I expected the days off to give my knees (and mind) some time to rest. Unfortunately… after a mile, my right knee started hurting and hurt for the rest of the day. No amount of icing or Aleve seems to be making it better. So, in the next week and a half, I’ll be taking it easy, trying to cross-train to keep up my endurance, and come race day (March 21), we’ll see where I am. If I can’t run the half-marathon, I’m not going to beat myself up about it. Sound good?

Not too much has happened these past two days, but I did receive a lovely package in the mail from the lovely Amie! These mini Larabars are the perfect snack-size…

… and made a great addition to my breakfast this morning, which I had to eat at my desk due to an 8 AM dentist appointment.

I mixed 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup water in the microwave, then added a sliced banana, 1/2 packet of Justin’s PB, and a Coconut Cream Pie mini Larabar.

This was one of the best combinations I’ve had in a long time! It’s funny, because in the past I don’t remember liking this flavor of Larabar too much. I might have to buy a big one just to crumble into my breakfast!

Amie also sent me a bunch of tea, which is going to come in really handy at work. It may be getting warm outside, but my office is freezing!

After work I met Ada for dinner at Peacefood Cafe; we’ve been trying to make plans for over a month now, and it was so nice to finally get together again! I ordered the pumpkin sandwich mashed and seasoned with a little sea salt, ground black pepper and extra virgin olive oil, topped with caramelized onions, ground walnuts, vegan goat cheese and seasonal greens (which I’ve ordered before and could probably eat every week without getting bored of it). We were talking so much that it probably took about 45 minutes to eat!

We split two desserts. The choices were endless and incredibly difficult to settle on, but we both enjoyed our selections.

The coconut cake (or “Funny Bone”) was moist and light…

… and the magic cookie tasted like a magic bar (/ 7-layer bar/ hello dolly) but was also made with shredded carrots. Mmm!

Regular posting will continue tomorrow. I had high hopes of staying up late to work, but I can barely keep my head up! All I want to do is sleep… have a great night.

Evening! Had another tough awakening this morning… I overslept and only had time to run a mile on the treadmill. Better than nothing though, right? It stopped raining so hopefully that’ll make it a little easier to get up and run six miles before work tomorrow, although it’s also supposed to snow. Winter, it’s time to go!

Breakfast was a little different than usual this morning.

1/2 cup oats cooked in 1/2 cup water

pumpkin

1/2 banana

cottage cheese

1 T Mararnatha No Stir Smooth Peanut Butter

Cinnamon

Stevia

This held me over pretty well (no loud tummy growling) without leaving me feeling stuffed, which usually happens.

In my lunchbag I packed an apple, orange, peach yogurt, and salad with spinach, beets tomatoes, beets, dried cranberries, feta, tempeh, Goddess + Vidalia Onion dressings.

Somehow I found myself at the office candy bowl and pulled out a Caramel Apple lollypop. Remember these?

Danielle made lemon poppyseed muffins last night and brought one in for me. Oddly enough I was just thinking of making these myself!

In case I ever run out of snacks at work, all I have to do is open up my desk drawer! I keep nutrition bars, packets of nut butter, and whatever samples I have lying around. I also keep silverware so I don’t have to keep throwing away plastic utensils, health items like Band-Aids, ibuprofen, Wet Ones, Diva Drops (I think that’s what they’re called… these changed my life! I can finally wear high heels comfortably), and a shot of Red Bull (in case I need an emergency boost). What do you keep in your desk or purse? Do you carry emergency snacks?

I’ve successfully gone without doing a major grocery shop this week, and I’ll probably be able to make it until Sunday! I had a smorgasboard dinner; an open faced sandwich with tempeh bacon, cheddar & asiago cheese, Ten Minute Vegetable Soup, and sauerkraut.

For dessert, I had a bowl of The Lite Choice‘s Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge soft serve that I had in the freezer. I was shocked how soft it was! All I did was let it thaw for about 10 minutes before eating.

Back to Wall Street! Check in tomorrow for a giveaway! It’s good one

What a good day. I slept in, saw friends, ate well… what could be better? More hours in the day, but alas.

This morning I woke up a little hazy from last night’s escapades, but made do with a strong pot of coffee and a good breakfast. I ate in parts: Peach Chobani Greek yogurt, sweet potato cranberry coconut muffin, Honeybell orange.

After taking my sweet time getting ready and lazing around, I met Caitlin for lunch at Sacred Chow, an organic vegan (and Kosher) cafe downton.

We both got the Souper Hero Combo (soup + 1/2 sandwich); I got a bowl of Sweet Potato and Cassava Soup with dill and Orange Blackstrap Seitan (orange-molasses seitan w/ red-hot onions and Thai ginger bbq sauce on a whole wheat baguette).

This was so good. My babysitter used to use cassava in her soups and I forgot how much I love it! The sandwich was quite hearty as well, and left my mouth burning (in a good way!).

We also hit up the In God We Trust sample sale, where I fell in love with this beret. I’ve never been a “beret person”, but this was too cute to pass up!

Caitlin and I parted ways, and I met my friend Levi to see the new Mel Gibson movie, Edge of Darkness. I really liked it! It reminded me a lot of Michael Clayton, with more blood. We snacked on gummies in the theater.

I had big plans to do some work while using the bike at the gym, but it was 7:15 by the time I got home and I was just ready to wind down the day. No biggie, but I really need to start being smarter about cross and strength training… I feel like I’ve taken a sort of lackadaisical approach to this half-marathon I’m supposedly training for. I have a 7 mile run scheduled for tomorrow but my knee still hurts from Thursday’s… if it gives me trouble in the morning, I’m just going to run myself over to the gym and get on that bike instead.

So, in place of gym tales, I present you with a tasty treat:

Sweet Potato Falafel Salad

I’ve been thinking of ways to recreated One Lucky Duck’s Falafel Salad at home without a dehydrator or pricey ingredients. I’d planned on making a sweet potato version of baked falafel with chickpeas, but lo and behold: no chickpeas in the pantry! I made do with black beans instead, and it turned out mighty fine if I do say so myself.

Sweet Potato “Falafel”

Inspired by this recipe

1 handful parsley or cilantro, chopped

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1 sweet potato baked or microwaved until fully cooked, mashed

1 clove garlic, crushed

1/2 cup cooked black beans

1/2 tsp ground coriander

salt

garnishes: paprika, sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 375. Mix first 6 ingredients together, gently mashing beans with a fork. Season with salt, to taste.

Coat baking sheet with cooking spray. Form balls out of 1 tbsp worth of sweet potato mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds and paprika. Bake for 30 minutes, turning once.

Makes about 12 balls.

Tahini Sauce

1/2 cup sesame tahini

1/2 cup water

juice of 1/4 lemon

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp agave nectar

salt to taste

Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Lick spoon.

Raw “Tabouli”

1 red bell pepper

1/3 head of cauliflower (about 2 handfuls)

1 handful parsley/cilantro

Pulse cauliflower in food processor until finely chopped. Pulse in red pepper. Pulse in parsley until the mixture resembles confetti.

Not a bad alternative, I’d say! My version is on the left… and doesn’t cost $17.

For dessert, I made strawberry banana soft serve with chocolate chips. However, I got a little impatient and didn’t wait for the fruit to fully freeze; it ended up being more of a smoothie!

It’s 10:30, but I really want to get some work done before I go to bed, so I’m going to shower, make the bed, and read 100 pages or so. Big plans for a Saturday night at home!

Good evening! I hope you’re all enjoying your long weekend… isn’t it nice when Sundays feel like Saturdays? I’m so grateful for the extra day. I’ve spent the past two days spending time with my family, relaxing, going for a head-clearing run in the park, watching movies, reading books, sale shopping (I did need those $10 hot pink cords from Gap )… my mom even treated me to a manicure and shoulder rub! So basically, I listened to your advice and did everything you suggested!

Yesterday I woke up early, despite having gotten up early and gone to bed late the night before. I made myself a colorful egg scramble with one whole egg + egg whites, basil, spinach, tomatoes, and feta, with a slice of whole wheat toast on the side.

Although my long runs are scheduled for Sundays, one look at the weather forecast told me it was supposed to rain. So I took advantage of the beautiful weather and ran 4.5 miles in the sunshine at a brisk- but pleasant- pace. I find that I almost always run faster outdoors than on the treadmill. I think it has to do with visual stimulation!

When I got back, I drank half a container of peach-and-mango coconut water. I’d never tried this flavor before, but it was great! Very tropical.

My parents and I met for lunch at Picnic. Despite having already had my morning coffee, I was feeling a little groggy and had a mug of green tea.

I ordered an enormous mozzarella, grilled vegetable and pesto sandwich on baguette. It came with a light, crisp salad; I ate about 3/4 of the bread and all of the cheesy vegetables.

After lunch, we went downtown to the Broadway Panhandler for a cooking demonstration and booksigning by Dynise Balcavage, vegan chef and fellow blogger at Urban Vegan . The Broadway Panhandler is an amazing cooking supply store in and of itself… I could have spent hours in there, and my wallet was a little lighter on the way out.

Dynise made crêpes with vegan nutella and chocolate mousse. The mousse was another version of tofu pudding! My dad treated me to her cookbook cookbook, which has a lot of great-looking recipes.

On the way home, I stopped at One Lucky Duck where my mom treated me to a take-out dinner. While waiting for my falafel salad, I bumped into Erica! It was almost one year to the day that I saw her last. Time flies!

This salad was so good. Obviously I can’t spend $17 on a salad all of the time, but it’s inspired me to make my own this coming week. Stay tuned!

For dessert, I did a little fridge and freezer cleaning… I present you with sundae in a jar! That’s what happens when you run low on both ice cream and hot fudge.

This morning, although I’d planned on running with Kath and Matt, I decided my body really just needed the sleep. For the first time in a long time, I slept past 10:00! It was glorious, let me tell ya! My mom and I enjoyed a nice breakfast together; it’s not every day we can read lounge around and read the newspaper with each other. I made us each bowls of 5 grain cereal.

1/3 cup 5 grain cereal cooked in 2/3 cup water

2 dried peach halves

warmed frozen strawberries

1 tsp chia seeds

1.5 tsp almond butter

cinnamon

brown sugar

The rest of the morning was spent doing my favorite thing: reading in bed! When hunger finally came a-callin’ again, we assembled a nice little smorgasbord of foods.

We had split-pea soup, bites of couscous and spaghetti with pesto, baguette, and artichokes (with a scrumptious lemon butter sauce)…

… and one of the most delicious pieces of cake I’ve ever had that my parents brought back from a dinner party they went to last night. The cake itself was hazelnut, with chocolate ganache filling, marzipan mascarpone frosting, homemade candied almonds and homemade chocolate. Out.of.this.world! This piece was huge; we split it three ways.

Dinner was equally decadent and delicious. My dad made swordfish and steamed green beans…

Avocado with balsamic vinaigrette…

… and fennel salad with orange and onion. This really doesn’t need any dressing, just a squirt of lemon juice!

I didn’t have any room left for dessert, but I had a baby spoonful of La Loo‘s Strawberry Darling goat milk ice cream. We’ve tried almost all the flavors by now… this one was pretty darn good!

The lovely Miss K also sent me some eye candy that reminded her of the Russian FOR MEN chocolate! Looks like we need to do a little retaliation, ladies…

I’m off to do a little reading and get some shut-eye… there’s a lot to be done tomorrow! If you have MLK day off, how will you spend it?

Giveaway alerts! Melissa is giving away nutrition bars and Jungwha is giving away chocolate and Greek yogurt!

Evening and happy Sunday! I hope you’ve all had wonderful weekends, whether you celebrated the holidays or simply enjoyed the days.

My Saturday was quite festive, starting with a morning spent at the soup kitchen. I haven’t been able to go as much as I would have liked in the past few months, but it was so nice to be back there again. There were many “regulars” I’ve known for almost 10 years!

After volunteering, my parents and I went to Peacefood Café for lunch.

This was their first time at an all-vegan restaurant. I really appreciate how supportive my family has been of my diet!

We ordered an appetizer to split: vegetable tamale with jalepeño and tomatoes.

The last time I ate at Peacewood, I enjoyed Caitlin‘s sandwich so much that I had to order it! My dad and I split the Roasted Japanese Pumpkin Sandwich with mashed and seasoned with a little sea salt, ground black pepper and extra virgin olive oil, topped with caramelized onions, ground walnuts, vegan goat cheese and seasonal greens. It was even better than I remembered!

We also shared the Pan-Seared French Horn Mushroom Panini with sun-dried tomatoes, arugula, artichoke aioli, mint & basil pesto. It was good, but we both agreed the pumpkin was the best.

My mom ordered the special of the day: Kidney Bean Chili with rice, mixed greens and homemade cornbread. This wasn’t her favorite; I loved it, however, and was the lucky recipient of the leftovers.

It was only my second time at Peacewood Café, but it’s already become one of my favorite restaurants on the Upper West Side. There are tasty, healthy options that carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, raw foodists and foodies alike can enjoy!

Last night when I got home I was quite the domestic goddess. I set to work in the kitchen, making Gena’s Cashew Cheese with Meyer Lemon and Dried Cherries.

I enjoyed it today with a Gala apple, whole wheat and flax pita bread, and tabbouleh. Delicious!

It was a cold and rainy day; I wanted to have a cozy and comforting dinner and came up with this soup.

Miso Soup with Salmon and Soba

Serves 2-3

I used salmon in this soup, but feel free to substitute any other protein source such as tofu, seitan, soft-boiled egg or whatever you choose.

4 oz soba noodles

4 tablespoons white miso paste

2 cups roughly torn broccoli florets (about 1/2 large bunch)

1/2 inch fresh ginger, thinly sliced

3 scallions (green onions), thinly sliced

soy sauce

salmon or protein of choice, such as fresh tofu, soft-boiled egg, or seitan

optional: Sriracha sauce

Cook noodles according to package directions. I used a package of green tea soba that I received from Asian Food Grocer, a Foodbuzz affiliate.

Drain and rinse with cold water; set aside. Bring 4 cups water to a boil. Add ginger and miso, stirring until miso is dissolved.

Add broccoli and scallions (reserving some for garnish), cooking until broccoli is crisp-tender. Remove from heat.

Stir in soba and divide into bowls. Top with salmon (grilled, poached, etc. to your liking), drizzle with soy sauce and Sriracha (if using) and serve!

After dinner, I spent the rest of the night on my hands and knees… scrubbing the floors! Since starting my job, I’ve been slacking a bit in the cleaning department, so I made up for it by sweeping, polishing, dusting and wiping into the wee hours of the morning. I felt a bit like Kath! It was actually pretty satisfying, and got my heart rate right up.

Now Ari and I are relaxing in bed, watching Gone With The Wind and sipping “The Big Red Monster”, a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel and Petit Sirah.

What was the best part of your weekend? Did you lay low or were you busy?

Don’t forget to send me your questions!

Have a great night!

Hey hey-yo! How are you? How was your Wednesday? I can’t believe that one week from tomorrow is Thanksgiving! I usually try to wake up early enough to catch some of the parade, then my mom and I make our famous sticky buns. Do you have traditions you keep up every year?

I seem to have unleashed the oatmeal beast within me yesterday, because that was just what I wanted this morning.

In the bowl:

1/2 cup oats

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup pumpkin

frozen berries

frozen pineapple

flaxy peanut butter

cinnamon

agave

The rest of the morning was spent preparing for an interview. I went into the city an hour and a half early so, subway problems or not, there’d be no chance of being late. I had so much spare time that I went into a deli to go over my notes and read some Canadian snail mail. To secure a seat, I bought some fruit salad.

The interview went well, I think; I was given an assignment to complete for Friday, so I went straight home to get started. I needed some brain fuel, so I made a quick salad:

Our house guest came into the kitchen while I was assembling it, took one look at the bowl, and said, “Are you really going to eat all of that salad?! You must have a really fast metabolism!” It was a salad of great girth, I’ll give him that. But of course I ate every scrap

In the mix:

spinach

grape tomatoes

1 grapefruit

1/2 avocado

leftover salmon

dressing made with rice vinegar, sesame oil, sesame seeds & chili flakes

The Lindt store on 5th was handing out holiday truffles on the street today, so I snatched one up and had it for dessert.

My body must have needed sleep because I nodded right off after lunch! Today is the fourth consecutive day I’ve gotten up significantly earlier than I’m used to, and the rest of the week will be no different. Hopefully in the next few weeks there will be more early mornings and regular hours, if you catch my drift! When I woke up, I made some coffee and snacked on these Jalepeño Honey Mustard Pretzel Sticks from Kay’s Naturals.

These are my favorite of the Kay’s products I’ve tried; they’re satisfying, and didn’t leave me with horrible garlic breath the way the protein chips did.

The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent working. When it was getting close to dinner time, I simmered and marinated some tempeh using the recipe for Hot Sauce-Glazed Tempeh from Veganomicon.

After about an hour, I plopped the tempeh onto the George Foreman, the apartment-dweller’s best friend. Aren’t grill marks satisfying?

I proceded to make one of the best sandwiches on earth: The LVP Reuben.

A reuben sandwich is traditionally made with corned beef, Swiss cheese, saurkraut, and creamy salad dressing. I don’t remember eating one even when I did eat meat, but my version is much more appealing to me. It’s based on one of my all-time favorite sandwiches: grilled cheddar with Granny Smith apple slices on Peppridge Farm Cinnamon Raisin Swirl bread. Tonight, I went a step further…

Grilled cheddar with Hot Sauce-Glazed Tempeh, Gala apple slices and baby spinach on Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel bread. My tum is grumbling at the memory. I also had a bowl of Sweet and Spicy Sweet Potato Leek Soup, garnished with cinnamon, nutmeg, shredded coconut and parsley.

Dinner for 1, at home, does not have to be boring.

Luckily I had the foresight to plan my dessert early in the day; I had two bananas sitting in the freezer and waiting to be processed into Chocolate Banana Soft Serve. Three words: Move over, Stögo! I topped mine with roasted almonds and walnuts.

It was rich, creamy, and far better than anything packaged I’ve bought recently. You better believe I licked up every last trace of “batter.”

I can’t wait to play around with this! There are so many options based on what’s in the pantry alone.

After dinner I finished my reading, and just as I was about to e-mail my notes to myself (I type everything out on my Blackberry… it’s an odd habit), the memo deleted itself. I searched IT message boards, asked people I knew with Blackberries if there was any way to retrieve data that wasn’t backed up on a computer… nothing. Seven hours of work has been LOST. So… tomorrow will be another early morning. It’s not the end of the world.

Bonne nuit

Good evening, Upper East Siders! How are you? I’m taking a little work break to blog and catch up on my Gossip.

Last night, after we got back from the wedding, I hunkered down to do some reading and prepare for my interviews. All of that brain stimulation must have shot my metabolism into overdrive, because only a couples hours after dinner, my tum was a-grumblin’ something fierce! I thought I might just be thirsty, but that didn’t seem to be it. Finally, I put down my book and headed into the kitchen to make a bowl of Kashi GoLean and Smart Start. Problem solved!

This morning, I woke up bright and early to see Ari off. As I mentioned, he’s going Vigilante through December, and had to leave at 7:30 this morning. I tried to go back to sleep, but my mind was already up and ready to go. I had to be at physical therapy at 10 anyway, so I just got up and made breakfast.

Taking Jess‘s advice, I heated up half of a Trader Joe’s Berry Mango Bran Muffin, crumbled it up, and tossed in on top of 0% Fage with some warmed frozen berries and a scoop of flaxy PB. I really like this peanut butter, by the way. It’s both crackly and crunchy and adds great texture!

Quite the mess!

My therapy session went well… I still have a lot of tightness in pretty much each muscle in my legs, so I have to keep working on that. Repeat after me: yoga, rolling and stretching, okay! When I got back, I briefly chatted with the guest who is staying with us, made myself an apple-cinnamon snack, and retreated to my room to be interviewed (via phone) with the HR department for the company I’m interviewing with.

It shaped up to be one of those days where I was constantly hungry, so I made something as soon as the clock showed that it was even remotely close to lunchtime. Ellie reminded me yesterday about the beauty of the crack wrap, so I made one with a whole wheat wrap, three-layer hummus, and a slice of Jarlsberg cheese.

I ate it with half a can of Progresso’s Fat Free Lentil soup. This isn’t the tastiest of the canned variety, but I had a hankering for soup. I’ll definitely be making my own in the near future!

Finished up the meal with a piece of salt water taffy for a sweet end.

I’ve been searching in vain for the seasonal Celestial Seasonings teas (like Sugar Cookie and Gingerbread)… any New Yorkers know where I can track it down? I settled on a cup of Sweet Coconut Thai Chai, which was a good substitute…

…but it knocked me right out! Ari caught me snoozing at 5PM when he woke me up with a phone call. Whoops! I snacked on some carrots to perk me back up…

… then did Yoga Download‘s Hip Opening Flow #2. I have trouble practicing yoga for more than 20 minutes when I’m not in class… does anyone have tips for staying in the moment? Turning off my phone would probably be a good start!

I heated up some leftover Coconut Barley Pilaf and made a quick salad with kale, broccoli slaw, grape tomatoes, sesame oil and rice wine vinegar.

Honestly, as much as I love my fancy salad dressings, I could probably make a sesame vinaigrette every night and be happy. It’s simple, but so delicious. I don’t even use measurements or mix anything together… the vinegar and oil just get drizzled on.

I made another quick dessert, starting with a tri-flavored chocolate sauce using Pure Dark cardamom chocolate, semisweet and bittersweet chocolate chips.

I added a few drops of water, microwaved the bowl for 35 seconds, then mixed in some Brown Sugar ice cream.

And thus concludes another day’s passing without having spent a single extra dollar on food. I’m going to have to buy some fresh produce soon, as we’re running low on fruit and vegetables, but otherwise the kitchen is pretty stocked. It’s a satisfying feeling.

Back to work… it’s going to be a late night. Bonne nuit

Happy Halloween! I hope you are all having a wonderful night, whether you’re at a party, parade, or staying at home watching movies. Ari and I decided to do the latter, although we’ve been sitting in our costumes all day waiting for Trick-or-Treaters!

Yesterday I started the day with my first (ever!) batch of Oats in a Jar.

I added 1/2 cup of oats and 1/2 cup of water to the almond butter jar and microwaved it for one minute.

I topped it with 1/2 banana, 2 chopped prunes, 3 walnuts, a little skim milk and brown sugar. It was delicious! I may or may not have rescued an empty jar of peanut butter from the trash so I can make this again…

My mom gave me an idea about how to solve the Ester-C powder problem… try mixing it in something else! I put a scoop into a little bit of plain yogurt.

It’s still really disgusting, and I had to down a cup of coffee right away after I ate it. But… it did the trick, and it went down a lot faster than if I’d had to drink it. I’m out of yogurt, though, so I’ll have to find some more creative ways to eat this.

I wanted to get an early start to my day, so I said goodbye to the hair this guy and headed to the gym.

Time was limited, so I just did some arms, abs, PT stretches (which I will post at the end for Melissa) and 18 minutes on the elliptical. Short and sweet. Afterward, I met George for lunch at Pizza Gruppo. Always one for deals, I ordered the salad + 1/2 sandwich special. The salad was bigger than I’d expected, and came with mushrooms!

My panini came with goat cheese, pesto, and roasted vegetables. It was really good! I haven’t had a sandwich I didn’t make myself in a looong time.

After lunch I stopped by Paragon to pick up a foam roller. There was so much pre-marathon mania going on… very exciting to be around! When I got home, I sprinkled 1/4 packet of YouBar‘s YouShake Blended Bliss into the last of my yogurt.

I also split an apple with cinnamon with Ari (who proudly told me he had green juice for lunch!) while we ran some Halloweenie-errands.

For some reason I was snackier than usual, so I had some chunks of energy while getting ready to meet my little redheaded friend for dinner.

Kalle and I found a Japanese restaurant with a great dinner special. It’s so easy to spend a lot of money when ordering sushi, so the specials are imperative. I ordered the Sashimi+Roll combination, which came with miso soup and salad.

The sweet potato roll was delicious… and my second in one week!

The sashimi was beautifully presented.

It came with two pieces of cucumber-wrapped fish… what a great alternative to rice!

The special also came with shrimp shumai and edamame.

Kalle’s rolls were also creatively presented and looked delicious.

After dinner, we went back to her apartment to talk and drink Malbec out of black goblets. I broke the cork in half, but managed to get it out of the bottle! Looks like my waitressing skills are falling by the wayside…

I got home pretty late and didn’t end up going to bed until almost 3… the night was definitely worth it, though.

And now, onto the physical therapy!

One exercise that I’ve been working on with my PT is called the clamshell, which strengthens quads. Lying on my side in bed or on the floor, I stack my knees at a 90 degree angle. Clenching my glutes and quads, I slowly raise one knee while keeping my feet together. I repeat this twenty times, then switch to my other side. Repeat series.

Another exercise that strengthens quads and calves is done by sitting on a chair or on the edge of the bed. Extend one leg straight out and flex glutes, quads, calves and toes. Twist leg to the side, then back to center. Repeat until leg is fatigued, and switch legs.

Around the blogs: Jungwha is giving away a Sodastream!

Happy Halloween from the Upwelling and LVP… have a great night!

Hi guys. I think you all officially earn the “most supportive” blog readers award. I was feeling a little down in the dumps when I last posted, but each and every comment really cheered me up. Of course I don’t want you all to break your hips and sprain your toes, but knowing that there are other people who have been injured and bounced back helps me feel a lot less alone about it. I’m in a much better place than I was the last time I hurt myself, mainly because I still have the use of my legs. As Ilana pointed out, at least I have legs. How’s that for perspective? Thou shalt not take thy body for granted.

Yesterday, knowing that I was probably going to get some not-so-good news from the physical therapist, I made myself a nice breakfast. I had two Kashi waffles; one with Barney Butter and French raspberry jam:

The second had plain nonfat Wallaby yogurt (Daddy-o bought this; even though I’ve been spoiled by the Greeks, this was nice and creamy) and fresh pomegranate seeds:

Like my DIY mug? I had some artistic talent as a kid.

I did not dress appropriately for the weather, and was both freezing and wet when it started raining. It rained for the next 16 hours. Are we in London? I snacked on a Banana Bread Larabar on my way to the gym do to some strength training.

At the gym, I did 10 minutes of stretching before starting my workout. I did all the leg machines that I saw, but wasn’t always sure that I was using them properly. There was a back extension machine that I thought would be helpful, but it was right in front of the personal trainers’ room and they were having some kind of meeting, so I didn’t want to look like an idiot trying to figure it out. Stupid, I know. I think I get three free PT sessions, so it would be nice to have someone show me what to do. I also did some arm and ab work. It was pretty boring, but I know I have to do it every other day no matter what. Blegh.

Total time: 1:02:04

Maximum heart rate: 122 (62%)

Average hear rate: 86 (43%)

Calories burned:: 136

These kinds of stats are clearly going to take some getting used to… I’m accustomed to having my heart rate consistently up in the 170-190 bracket and expending at least 300 calories per workout. Such is life.

I finally got around to getting groceries at Whole Foods. I shopped the sales and ended up getting quite a bit of stuff for under $60. The cashier (who just tore her ACL… small world) even commented on how well I did!

Not pictured: dog treats for Charley. And don’t you worry, that lone beer will be consumed by the time this post is through!

It was already close to three by the time I got around to eating, but I had a pretty good lunch! The star was inspired by one of my favorite ladies. Mama Lovin may have moved on to a smaller- more secure- domain, but the crack wrap lives on! This was made with a piece of Lavash and stuffed with hummus, white cheddar, gorgonzola and spinach.

I also had some baby carrots…

… and salmon spring rolls. I’d thought they were shrimp when I bought them, but these were still good!

It was nice to be warm and cozy inside.

The mail came pretty soon, and cheered me right up. I got my giveaway prize from Erin…

How cool is this necklace?! I love funky jewelry. And can you believe she made this herself? I’d probably sew my finger to the fabric if I tried to use a sewing machine. She is also running a marathon this weekend, so please wish her luck! I’m so freaking proud of her.

The mailman also brought me a card from my favorite neo-Russian. Look at those stamps!

That says all kinds of nice things in Russian. I miss this girl so much it’s not even funny.

Since I was dining solo for the umpteenth time this week, I wanted to make myself a nice (and easy) dinner. I flipped through the November issue of Bon Appétit, and settled on Smoky Greens and Beans.

I made my own vegetable stock using Better Than Bouillan‘s Chili and Vegetable Bases. My dad started using these when I became a vegetarian 8 years ago, and I really like the flavor.

For the “greens” part of the recipe, I used green chard, red chard, and collard greens. Aren’t the colors gorgeous?

I couldn’t decide what I wanted to serve the stew with, and settled on oatmeal. It has been quite some time since I made savory oats!

I seasoned the finished product with sea salt, black pepper, and parmesan.

This dish is a keeper.

Good thing I have leftovers!

I thought I deserved a drink after a trying day, so I sipped on this Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale over the course of two hours. I know I’m not alone when I say that I look forward to pumpkin beer all year! It wasn’t the best and it wasn’t the worst that I’ve had, but it did make me miss my friends.

There’s been ice cream around pretty much every single night, and I still haven’t gotten it out of my system! I made myself a fabulous chocolate peanut butter sauce using Chocolate PB2 and Hot Damn Cocoa (from Hell’s Kitchen). Just add water!

I drizzled it on mission fig ice cream and topped it all with half a banana, enjoyed while watching Tokyo!.

Sweet way to end a bitter day.

Now I’m off to go walk the pooch and meet a lovely for a treat. What are your weekend plans? Enjoy them!

Good morning and happy Wednesday! How is your day going so far? Mine’s going just fine, although I can’t figure out how it’s already 10:30! The same thing happened last night: I got home at 7:30, had dinner, and all of the sudden it was after midnight. Crazy!

Yesterday, as I mentioned, I slept through the alarm. My training plan had 2 easy miles scheduled in for the day, and since I had to intern and go to an event in the evening, there was really no other time to go. So I threw on my exercise clothes and raced – slowly, of course- out the door, jamming along to the Gaga.

Total distance: 1.96 miles

Total time: 20:54

Maximum heart rate: 176 (89%)

Average heart rate: 166 (84%)

Calories burned: 216

When I was back and showered I was already running late, so made a quick breakfast of plain Chobani with 1/2 banana, and a piece of whole wheat toast with the rest of the banana, honey and cinnamon.

There didn’t end up being too much for me to do at work, so I was able to leave after lunch. My mom also had a little time in the morning before her flight to Paris, so she met me in the Village and we had a nice lunch at Doma.

I found this cafe on my first day of back in June, then couldn’t find it again until yesterday. I have a pretty terrible sense of direction. I wanted a salad but couldn’t decide which one, and at the last minute decided to go for the soup + 1/2 sandwich combo.

The soup was black bean (I removed the white and creamy sour cream):

I chose a grilled gruyère sandwich to feel a little more française.

Everything was good, but the sandwich was a little tough and I left craving veggies.

After lunch, we strolled around and somehow found ourselves in front of a pet store. I took this to taunt Ari with send to Ari…

No, a pup did not come home with me. It was sad, but it would be sadder if I couldn’t afford to feed it. Anyway, Mama and I moseyed along until we hit The Light Choice. We both got what we agreed was the best Tasti-type flavor yet: Almond Joy! It tasted just like Gena‘s Raw Almond milk, but frozen.

We also stopped and picked up two late-birthday presents: a new gym bag (I’ll post pictures of my old one later… it was gross) and new running shoes. My mom finally had to leave to go to the airport (I really had to twist her arm ) and I went home.

My friend Howard invited me to a cocktail party and kitchen demonstration at Smallbone of Devizes, an upscale kitchen boutique on the Upper East Side. I knew there would be a lot of good food and I didn’t want to be ravenous when I got there, so I had an apple before I left.

The party was hosted by Architectural Digest and catered by Daniel, one of the fanciest (and tastiest) restaurants in New York. Everything was amazing, and I really wish I could have documented it for you! Unfortunately, AD was covering the whole thing and wouldn’t allow outside photography. Trust me when I say that my fingers were itching to whip out my camera and snap photos of the chef poaching partridge breast in Napa cabbage leaves. I may not eat those myself, but I can appreciate the skill it takes to prepare such a lovely dish. Two glasses of wine later I left and went home to eat dinner.

My knee was really hurting so I didn’t want to schlep all the way out to the grocery store; instead I stopped at Gourmet Garage and picked up some sashimi.

I also had a few bites of cold pasta.

Although I’d already had a treat once today and enjoyed two glasses of wine, I’d been thinking about dessert all day. I really wanted to contribute to Julie‘s tribute to Gourmet magazine, so I made myself an individual portion of the magazine’s Caramelized Banana Splits with Hot Chocolate Sauce, from their 2009 “Quick Kitchen” booklet.

I adjusted the recipe to be a little more LVP-friendly, substituting Brummel & Brown for butter, skim milk for heavy cream, and La Loo’s Mission Fig Goat Milk Ice Cream for regular old vanilla.

This ice cream, by the way, is unbelievable.

The Banana Split was amazing: the bananas were perfectly caramelized, the toasted nuts gave the smooth chocolate a spectacular crunch!, and the fig ice cream was a wonderful surprise that complemented each different flavor.

We still have the November issue of Gourmet to look forward to, but I can’t imagine a holiday season without their Christmas cookie special. I’m sure Gourmet‘s demise is going to open all kinds of doors in the world of food media, but it’s going to take a lot of getting used to. I foresee poring over back-issues from the 1970s in my future…

Except for the lack of vegetables consumed, it was a pretty great day. I did, however, spend the last few hours with my knee bound up like this…

…icing on and off. When I went outside to walk Charley, I felt like I could barely walk. A man, who was clearly on his first few days of crutches, passed me on the street. I will admit, I’m a little discouraged. I’m really hoping this isn’t serious, because I am just starting to feel like a real athlete, and that maybe the 2010 NYC Marathon is a goal within reach. We’ll see. I’m going to take it slow; I’ll try using the bike at the gym today and see how that feels.

Do you push through an injury or go straight to the doctor?

Have a great day!
