I’ve gotten several e-mails from readers who are unable to comment, load the site, or in worst cases, has had their computer crash while trying to read Lilveggiepatch. Ted Glass, the amazing web-designer responsible for everything from the layout to the wallpaper to the beautifully hand-drawn banner and icons, has been working to try and solve this problem. We now have only one post per page which I realize is not ideal, but may be easier on your systems. I’ve tried loading the site on three computers and have had success with this. Please let me know how it works for you!

*I got halfway through this post last night when Safari “unexpectedly quit”, deleting almost everything. Please excuse the tardiness!

This morning I woke up almost an hour before my alarm and couldn’t get back to sleep. Rather than stare at the ceiling until it was time to get up, I took my yoga mat downstairs to do a 20 minute Hip Opening Flow in my pyjamas. I haven’t done any exercise at all since my race; I’m hoping to have time to run again or go to the gym again this weekend. In the meantime, I’ll do yoga when I can. It was such a nice way to start the day: I felt calm, relaxed, and ready for it. The same way breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, I really believe that the tone you set in the morning- how you’re feeling, what you do- affects the rest of your day up until you go to sleep. How do you start your day on the right foot?

After my practice, I made a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal with a banana, pumpkin, cinnamon, agave and flaxy peanut butter.

Ari came to the rescue and got the top to my thermos unscrewed so I sailed smoothly through my busy morning on a steady stream of caffeine. I’m still learning the ropes at my job, and I’ll use whatever I ca as a safety net! Before I knew it, it was almost 12. I try to wait until at least 1:00 to take my lunch break, so I reached into my snack drawer for a mini Clif bar.

When I did finally break for lunch, I had leftover Thai at my desk. Thinking it would be easier to eat out of the containers, I removed the wire handles and reheated them that way (I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but DO NOT put metal in the microwave). The extra flaps ended up getting in the way every time I went in for a bite, and it was very awkward to eat!

I also had an apple and a honey-flavored Oikos Greek yogurt.

I worked through the rest of the afternoon, pausing only to nosh on clemmies…

… and a square of milk chocolate I was given by a staff member while waiting in line at J.Crew.

I left work at 5:30 to meet my friend Howard for a drink at The Modern, the swanky bar and restaurant that is run by MoMA. While the restaurant itself is very expensive, the drink and appetizer menu in the cocktail lounge is very reasonable. I had a glass of Victoria Pinot Gris, one of my favorite wine varietals.

Ari and I met up in the neighborhood and went home together. We puttered around in the kitchen for a while listening to music, and before I knew it it was 9:30 and I hadn’t eaten dinner yet! I’d somehow been preparing it for most of this time, but I guess I wasn’t quite as efficient as usual.

I had a Hugh Jass salad with spinach, red cabbage, roasted Brussels (molasses, olive oil, balsamic), carrots, and grilled tempeh (boiled first, then marinated and grilled with rice vinegar, soy sauce, agave and cayenne). I’d been planning this salad all week, and oddly enough Mama Pea had something similar herself!

This really was enormous. I’d been nibbling on Brussels sprouts all night and didn’t end up eating all of the ones in my dinner. I’ll go ahead spoil the surprise… I’m going to eat the same thing for lunch tomorrow.

I sipped on a mug of hot chocolate while watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. Every time I watch Charlie Brown, I love it more and more. Did I really watch this as a little kid?!

For some reason I’ve been waking up earlier and earlier each day… my body must finally be settling into the working woman’s groove I would like to get 8 hours of sleep every night, but that might be a little too optimistic. Anyway, I’m off to start the day. Have a great one!

Evening! How was your day? Mine was just fine, but I’m ready to crawl into bed and call it a night!

This morning when I woke up at 8:30, I panicked for a few minutes before remembering that my boss (at my internship) had canceled work for the day. I was up and ready to go, though, which things to do and people to see!

I was excited to try these goji berries with my breakfast. I’ve only ever tasted these chopped up and mixed into other things, but when I snatched them right up when I spotted this bag on sale for $2.19 at the food co-op this weekend (they’re usually almost triple that price). Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, and among their many benefits they are touted to improve eyesight (they’re rich in beta carotene), boost immunity, and spice up your sex life

I tossed them in with Greek yogurt, 1/2 toasted Trader Joe’s Berry Mango muffin, warmed frozen berries and flaxy peanut butter. The goji berries are firm but chewy; the texture really complemented the rest of the mess.

This held me over for a really long time. The rest of the morning was spent reading, researching, and waiting until I was digested enough to go for a run. I warmed up with a 20 minute hip opening flow, then set out for an easy 2 mile run.

Total distance: 2 miles

Total time: 20:09

Most of my runs are going to have to be in the morning now that it’s getting dark earlier; I’ll have to crank out some long runs on the treadmill when I’m in Russia, however. I’m a little nervous that I won’t be able (psychologically) to run 7 miles on a treadmill…. What are you tips for making it through a long treadmill session?

Lunch was pretty basic (and very green): the last of the spinach and rice soup and a crunchy salad (spinach, broccoli slaw, celery, roasted almonds; sesame oil/rice vinegar/sesame seed dressing).

My interview was at 3:30; when it was over I hopped right back onto the subway and headed home. I had 1/3 of a Key Lime Pie Larabar on the ride back:

I found myself in one of the rare instances when I didn’t have anything to read on the subway… it was completely disorienting. I always have a book with me (sometimes two!); I would have brought one to prom if it had fit in my clutch! Ari calls me his word nerd.

When I got home, I went straight to the kitchen to unwind and get dinner started. I’ve had my eye on Martha Stewart‘s recipe for Roasted Cauliflower with Pasta and Lemon Zest (in the November 2009 issue) for quite some time… a little too much time, because the head of cauliflower I’d bought in anticipation a couple weeks ago had started to mold. But have no fear! I just sliced off the offending areas. I’m frugal, what can I say?

While slicing onion, I remembered what one of my cooking teachers always said: always cut out the middle greenish part of an onion. I can’t quite remember why that is; I think it has something to do with it not being fully developed yet and causing stomachaches.

I was eager to try out this pasta… Nature’s Place is Hannaford grocery store’s natural, minimally processed brand. Fresh (not dried) pasta always tastes so much better to me.

Plus, they look like little nests! Two “nests” make one serving.

When the veggies finished roasting (perfectly crispy!), it was all I could do to keep myself from eating them all right off the baking sheet. I’d already made quite a dent in the cauliflower while I was chopping it… if I wasn’t careful, I wouldn’t have any ingredients left for dinner!

I tossed the roasted cauliflower with the pasta and added lemon zest, fresh parsley, and a drizzle of olive oil.

When it comes to parsley and other fresh herbs, I’m of the “more is more” mindset.

Lest you think this was a dainty, “ladylike” portion…

I had enough fuel to run a marathon with this baby. Come November 6, you just might find me eating it!

There wasn’t too much room in my tum for dessert, but in the words of Tim Gunn, I made it work. Dried figs and prunes stuffed with dark chocolate chips are so good… and they just keep me going back for more. They kind of look like frogs, right? I seem to have successfully eaten nuts in some form or other for every meal and snack today.

I’m off to seal my day with a lunar flow practice and hope to be in bed by 10. I’ll make it work.

Bonne nuit

Edited to add: Kristina from Stonyfield Farm wants me to let you all know about a fun “Greek” opportunity!

“When consumers buy our quarts instead of single-serving cups, they pay less for their yogurt, but we know that a quart is not as convenient as single-serving cups for on the go consumption,” says our President and CE-Yo Gary HIrshberg. “The reusable yogurt cup gives our quart buyers the convenience of the Stonyfield 6 oz cups by providing a way to create easily transportable single servings for anywhere, anytime.”

Yogurt lovers just have to buy four Stonyfield yogurt quarts through December, and mail in the foil lids (describing this offer), and they’ll receive the reusable, eight-ounce yogurt cup made by Preserve®. Made from 100% recycled plastic, the cup is perfect for yogurt-lovers on the go, the ideal size for breakfast or a snack, with room to stir in fruit or granola. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA-free with a screw-on lid – and it’s made in the US.

Consumers will also get $4.50 worth of Stonyfield and Preserve coupons along with the cup.

Our recycling partner since 2000, Preserve uses innovative methods to turn used materials (including used Stonyfield yogurt cups) into stylish, useful household products like toothbrushes, colanders, cutting boards and tableware. Preserve products are 100% recycled and recyclable too.

Consumers can mail clean foil lids, with name, address and phone number on an index card or 4” x 6” sheet of paper by February 28, 2010 to:

Stonyfield Farm
Reusable Cup Offer
PO Box 4840
Manchester, NH 03108-4840

Cups will be shipped starting in January, 2010 with delivery in 10 to 12 weeks. This offer is good only in the US, while cup supplies last, and is limited to one cup per household (to better spread the love around).

So save those lids!

Hey there, strangers! How was your weekend? Mine was lovely… I spent the last few days relaxing in upstate New York with my parents. Time seems to move slower there; I never felt like I was rushing to catch my breath or finish five things at once. It was a nice change. What did you do?

Here’s a quick re-cap of the weekend chez with Mom & Pop LVP, Do/Don’t style!

DO make Eggs In A Basket out of an open-face grilled cheese sandwich. Thanks for the idea, Kaytee!

DO enjoy pumpkin whole wheat pancakes on a frosty fall morning. The secret to their fluffiness? A little bit of vinegar.

DO support your local farmers and buy apples at the orchard…

…and while there, DO pick up an apple cider donut for your mama.

It will make her happy.

DO top your salads with Red Ants On A Log (celery with Sunbutter and dried cherries).

DON’T feel silly when you squeal with delight after finding holiday teas at your local food co-op, after searching every chain grocery store with no luck.

DON’T gloat about winning some fancy protein powder from your neighborhood Everythingtarian.

DO share Holly‘s pumpkin molasses cookies with those who gave you life… albeit grudgingly.

DO cozy up to a mug of Spiced POM Cider…

DO have a nice dinner at Church and Main, a sustainable restaurant that supports local farmers and uses only the freshest ingredients (and DO go home and watch Food, Inc. afterward).

Good evening, Upper East Siders! How are you? I’m taking a little work break to blog and catch up on my Gossip.

Last night, after we got back from the wedding, I hunkered down to do some reading and prepare for my interviews. All of that brain stimulation must have shot my metabolism into overdrive, because only a couples hours after dinner, my tum was a-grumblin’ something fierce! I thought I might just be thirsty, but that didn’t seem to be it. Finally, I put down my book and headed into the kitchen to make a bowl of Kashi GoLean and Smart Start. Problem solved!

This morning, I woke up bright and early to see Ari off. As I mentioned, he’s going Vigilante through December, and had to leave at 7:30 this morning. I tried to go back to sleep, but my mind was already up and ready to go. I had to be at physical therapy at 10 anyway, so I just got up and made breakfast.

Taking Jess‘s advice, I heated up half of a Trader Joe’s Berry Mango Bran Muffin, crumbled it up, and tossed in on top of 0% Fage with some warmed frozen berries and a scoop of flaxy PB. I really like this peanut butter, by the way. It’s both crackly and crunchy and adds great texture!

Quite the mess!

My therapy session went well… I still have a lot of tightness in pretty much each muscle in my legs, so I have to keep working on that. Repeat after me: yoga, rolling and stretching, okay! When I got back, I briefly chatted with the guest who is staying with us, made myself an apple-cinnamon snack, and retreated to my room to be interviewed (via phone) with the HR department for the company I’m interviewing with.

It shaped up to be one of those days where I was constantly hungry, so I made something as soon as the clock showed that it was even remotely close to lunchtime. Ellie reminded me yesterday about the beauty of the crack wrap, so I made one with a whole wheat wrap, three-layer hummus, and a slice of Jarlsberg cheese.

I ate it with half a can of Progresso’s Fat Free Lentil soup. This isn’t the tastiest of the canned variety, but I had a hankering for soup. I’ll definitely be making my own in the near future!

Finished up the meal with a piece of salt water taffy for a sweet end.

I’ve been searching in vain for the seasonal Celestial Seasonings teas (like Sugar Cookie and Gingerbread)… any New Yorkers know where I can track it down? I settled on a cup of Sweet Coconut Thai Chai, which was a good substitute…

…but it knocked me right out! Ari caught me snoozing at 5PM when he woke me up with a phone call. Whoops! I snacked on some carrots to perk me back up…

… then did Yoga Download‘s Hip Opening Flow #2. I have trouble practicing yoga for more than 20 minutes when I’m not in class… does anyone have tips for staying in the moment? Turning off my phone would probably be a good start!

I heated up some leftover Coconut Barley Pilaf and made a quick salad with kale, broccoli slaw, grape tomatoes, sesame oil and rice wine vinegar.

Honestly, as much as I love my fancy salad dressings, I could probably make a sesame vinaigrette every night and be happy. It’s simple, but so delicious. I don’t even use measurements or mix anything together… the vinegar and oil just get drizzled on.

I made another quick dessert, starting with a tri-flavored chocolate sauce using Pure Dark cardamom chocolate, semisweet and bittersweet chocolate chips.

I added a few drops of water, microwaved the bowl for 35 seconds, then mixed in some Brown Sugar ice cream.

And thus concludes another day’s passing without having spent a single extra dollar on food. I’m going to have to buy some fresh produce soon, as we’re running low on fruit and vegetables, but otherwise the kitchen is pretty stocked. It’s a satisfying feeling.

Back to work… it’s going to be a late night. Bonne nuit

Good evening and happy Monday! I hope the start to your week- and your November- is going swimmingly. It’s strange to think that another year is almost over already, and I feel like I only just graduated! I have two bits of news… one I’ll share now, and one that’s going to wait until the end of the post.

As you know, I’ve been devoting most of my time recently to researching and applying for jobs. I recently applied to an entry level job at Wine Spectator, and the editor who looked over my application noted, after browsing through the blog and reading my cover letter, noted that while I have a clear and definite passion for food, my interest has not been directed towards wine. While I may not get this particular job, I’ve decided that I do want to take a more active pursuit towards learning about wine. Wine has always been important to my family, but with the exception of knowing that Malbec is from Argentina, Vouvray is from the Loire Valley and 2007 was a good year for white, I know next to nothing. So I’ve decided to take a proactive approach! I’m going to take advantage of the free tastings that go on every day around the city, and I’ll do my best to have some inkling about the wine I pluck off the $10-and-under shelf at the liquor store. In the next few days, I’ll add a special tab on the blog devoted purely to vino in order to chronicle my progress. I don’t know where this will take me, but since I have a little more time on my hands due to unemployment, I’m excited to learn a useful skill and pursue a new hobby!

Anyway… let’s jump back a bit.

Yesterday I was awakened quite early as Ari left for a morning meeting. Musicians keep very strange hours, I tell ya! Since I was already up, I decided to make a breakfast cookie to plop in the fridge while I went back to sleep for a few hours.

Jim was made of:

1/3 cup oats

1/2 banana

2 T skim milk

1/2 packet YouShake Vanilla Dream protein powder

1 t peanut butter

toppings: cinnamon, 2 prunes, 1 fig, 1 pecan

I also broke into my new McNulty’s Sumatra coffee to get my buzz on. And on and on.

Finally found a real solution to the Ester-C problem… POM Wonderful‘s Pomegranate Nectarine juice (which the company sent to me a few weeks ago) is sweet enough to completely mask the taste! I simply dissolved 1/3 teaspoon of Ester-C into 1/4 cup of juice and gulped it down as fast as possible. All I was left with was a pleasant fruity taste!

After I finished up breakfast, I looked at the time, packed my gym bag and hustled out the door to make a 12:15 60 minute Pilates class in the city. I got there five minutes early and went into the studio with my jacket, bag and shoes still on so that I could reserve a spot on the floor. Class had already started! I was a little annoyed- I didn’t want to disrupt the class, but it was early! It was also pretty warm and really stuffy, and I thought about asking the instructor to turn off the heat. After ten minutes, we still hadn’t moved to the mat to work on our cores and instead seemed to be moving through a Vinyasa flow. I turned to the girl next to me and whispered, “This isn’t Pilates, is it?” She shook her head and whispered, “Nope, it’s hot yoga!” Oops. I really love Bikram, but had I known I would be taking the class I would have hydrated, brought water with me, and not just had half a pot of coffee! Still, I’m glad I stayed for the full 90 minutes, and even more glad that I didn’t pass out from dehydration!

When class was over, I went home to have lunch and get some work done. I was surprised with festive snail mail from my girlies, which brightened up my day.

I hadn’t brought any food with me, so I rooted around in the freezer to check out the pickings. Not bad! I found bulgur pilaf with mixed vegetables, to which I added raisins and cilantro:

I also found sweet potato soup with navy beans from the Moosewood Cookbook, which I also added cilantro, peanuts and raisins to.

I washed it all down with Natural-flavored Zevia:

Not bad for an improvised lunch!

A little later, I snacked on a Jonagold apple while I did some work.

I’m pretty sure Ari had dinner while it was still light out, so I made a big orange salad with cilantro-chili vinaigrette for myself.

In the mix:

two handfuls of spinach

1 sweet potato, microwaved and diced

1 orange

1 Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burger

shredded carrots

I made the cilantro-chili vinaigrette with:

1/2 T toasted sesame oil

1 T olive oil

2 Trice vinegar

1/2 t Sriracha sauce

1/2 T raw blue agave nectar

1 slice red onion

handful cilantro

1/2 t chili flakes

It was enjoyed with a bowl of leftover miso soup and Christina Yang.

For dessert, I had 1/2 each of a brownie and blondie Edgie.

We watched half of Good Bye Lenin! before tuckering out for the night. It’s been on my Netflix queue for years, but I’m really glad we finally saw it! Or, half of it at least

Onto the second bit of news! My dad called today with a proposition. He’ll be traveling to Russia in December for work and offered to take me with him. Let me think… yes!!! We’ll be in Moscow for four days, then we go to St. Petersburg for two. Not only do I get to spend some much-needed quality time with Daddy-O, but I’ll also get to see my Sarah!!! I can’t wait. Life is good!

This morning I woke up with the line “Couscous is a traditional North African dish…” running through my head. I guess I’ll be making some of that soon! I don’t always remember my dreams, but when I do, they’re usually pretty vivid. What dreams have you had recently?

Yesterday I dug into my stash of Vitamuffins and pulled out a new flavor: Double Chocolate Dream.

Look at those bubbling chocolate chips!

I crumbled the muffin and topped it with Greek yogurt, 1/2 banana, and a fresh batch of almond milk. It hit the spot.

A little later, I snacked on an apple:

Yesterday was one of those days when I really needed that extra push to get me moving. I had some reading to do but was starting to get a little stir-crazy and needed to get out of the house. There was a 1:30 yoga class I was thinking of going to, but I made every excuse not to go: I’d have to take a 30-minute subway ride each way, which takes away from my reading time. I’d have to pack my lunch, but would it be too cold to eat it outside? And once I was in the city, I might as well stay there for a little and get some work done, but where would I go? Every excuse in the book. Lucky for me, Sarah and Will were on gChat, and kicked my booty into shape.

Sometimes a little nudge is all it takes. I loaded up on 1/2 banana with almond butter before I left:

The Vinyasa was good; I’m glad I went, but there was a moment when I looked around and all of the other students were getting into a certain pose, and I had no idea how to do it. I could have just asked the instructor for some help, but I was too frustrated with myself and just sat on my mat instead. I’ll work on getting my pride in check for next week’s class.

After class, I brought my lunch and ate it in the park (it was not too cold). My dad had found this amazing sprout salad (which I snatched up as soon as he showed me):

This whole box- almost 1 lb of pure sprout- was less than $3!

I piled sprouts, carrots, corn, beets, tomatoes, dulse and nooch into one side of my container; 3-layer hummus went into the other.

It was a salad of girth!

I also brought a package of Kay’s Naturals Golden Butter Twists Gluten-free/High Protein Pretzels.

I loved these pretzels! They’re crunchy, perfectly salted, and were perfect dipped in hummus.

After finishing up, I headed over to Everyman Espressso, ordered a skim cappuccino, and worked diligently for three hours.

After I read 100 pages, I enjoyed a Godiva Pumpkin Truffle that my mom got me. These seasonal truffles hold a special place in our family tradition; we get them every year, and after the first bite, you know Fall really has begun. How do you reward yourself to stay motivated and power through work?

When I got home, I wanted something quick and easy for dinner. I toasted up an Ezekiel English muffin with asiago cheese, and had a bowl of lentil soup. (I’m not going to lie, I am so tired of this soup! I’m sure you are, too. Only one serving left, I promise!)

Dessert was mighty fine, and complemented Gossip Girl quite nicely: Vanilla Coconut ice cream with frozen berries, cherries and almond milk.

Good morning and happy almost-weekend! I’ve already had a completely satisfying day thus far, and it’s only 11:45! But, alas, that is a story for another day. That day would be tomorrow. Hehe

To be perfectly honest, I can barely remember yesterday! Thank heavens for food photography. I started the morning with a nutritious breakfast, brought to you by Mr. Golden Corn VitaTop.

I crumbled him up and sprinkled him between layers of Fage 0% (finally caved and splurged) and a red plum. I have a feeling the last weeks of summer fruit are upon us!

The rest of the morning was spent folding laundry and cleaning. Although it was fun while it lasted, it was time for my surrogate Laundry Boyfriend to go.

Mid-clean, I stopped for an Amazing Grass-1/2 banana-PB shake:

Then I packed up my lunch and scooted into the city, just in time for my Vinyasa class. I was in the right class this time, and my muscles were very happy about it. The class kicked my butt… for some reason, no matter how much strength training I do, my arms never seem strong enough! I fell over in Crow again, but I laughed it off and promised myself that one day, however far away that day may be, I will be able to do it.

After yoga, I was more than ready for lunch. It was cold and windy outside, so in the spirit of all things “Vigilante“, I unpacked the items I’d brought…

Black-eyed peas, tomatoes, sprouts, carrots, and hummus:

1 heart of romaine:

Strawberry Oikos:

I assembled my salad:

I only looked a little bit guilty while I ate

Edible magazines are promoting Terry Walters’ Clean Food book (which I really need to check out) in such an innovative way… with basil seeds! What a great idea. I just have to find a place to plant them that gets enough sunlight!

After lunch, I wandered aimlessly for a bit to kill some time before work. Things have gotten a little crazy for me recently, and I’ve found myself to be… more emotional than I usually am. It’s a difficult time for all post-grads (and everyone else!); I’m just trying to find ways to tackle and take charge of it. This blondie (from the Union Square Farmer’s Market) helped.

It was very heavy, but the sugar and butter made me feel better. There’s a lot to be said for comfort food!

I sat on a stoop (one of my favorite things to do in the city) and traveled back to 1960s Paris…

I drank the wheat grass at work, mixed with water and a squirt of fresh- squeezed OJ.

The restaurant was pretty dead last night, and since I was closing, the clock seemed to move unbearably slowly. I was anticipating my 6 mile run in the morning, and all I wanted to do was get in bed and go to sleep.

Dinner was a lovely salad: mixed greens with tomatoes, red pepper, celery, walnuts, and… grilled shrimp. Muy bien!

I ate an apple on the way out the door…

… and decided to splurge on a cab. I’ve finally figured out the fastest and cheapest route home, and in terms of time and safety, is really worth spending the money on when it’s late. I was in bed at 12:45, and although my mind raced just thinking about my long run, I fell right to sleep.

I’m on a strict time budget today, so please forgive my good-blog-friend tardiness. Have a great day!

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be spending the night at my parents’ house, babysitting this guy. My first race is on Sunday morning (you still have time to donate!), and Ilana and I are going to have a sleepover the night before to get ready and be girly. Should be a blasty

Breakfast yesterday was my new standard bowl of tastiness: one banana and one apple bathed in homemade raw almond/walnut milk. Man oh man, this stuff is GOOD. I don’t know what I would do without Gena‘s recipes!

Before I went into the city for yoga, I grabbed this Botanic No. 7 Kombucha that I found on sale for $2.99. Still pricey, but it’s hard to ignore cravings. Look at that cute little foot in the background!

I got to the gym with time to spare, unlike last week. Tina recently posted about ways to make sure you actually complete your exercise goals, and she’s right: an overbooked class is one of the surest ways to sabotage your workout! Anyway, I found a mat (although I should really start bringing my own) and reserved a spot on the floor, then looked around at my neighbors. That’s strange… why did everyone have barbells next to them? As more and more people filed into the room, weights in hand, I started to worry that perhaps I was in the wrong class. I went outside to check the schedule, and I was right: I wasn’t in Vinyasa Flow, I was in Buff Yoga, the class before. I’d seen the Buff Yogis on their way out as I was on my way in before; they were always pouring sweat and looked as if they’d just gone through military training. I decided to stick it out, and let me tell you: it was SO HARD. There were a few things I couldn’t do, like a Three-Legged Dog Vinyasa series while keeping a barbell balanced in the crook of my leg, so I just sat those out. I was mostly just proud of myself for staying in the room, because there were times when I really wanted to leave. I’m not sure if I’ll go back to that class; I was really in the room for something a little more relaxing, but it was a good experience. All of my muscle groups are currently reliving the experience now… this girl is SORE.

After showering, I went to the park to eat lunch. I’d packed two salads: curried mashed tofu and spinach with sprouts and hummus.

I also had an apple.

A little later, my stomach was really bothering me (it’s been a little off all week) so I stopped at Whole Foods for a cranberry walnut roll to eat on the way to work. I find that carbs, either simple or complex, often settle an upset stomach.

At work, I snacked on a ChocChip Trailmix PURE bar.

Pros: Tastes like a chocolate chip trail mix cookie! The chunks are small and perfectly blended, but each flavor is distinguishable. You know I’m a sucker for tart/sweet combinations, and this was great. It kept me satisfied through my shift and until dinner.

Cons: I would have liked the tart/sweet to move to salty/sweet, but this was just about perfect.

Would I buy this again? Fo sho.

Dinner was a big salad with mixed greens, apples, tomatoes, walnuts, beets and peppers. The best part? “Mexican salad” that Mario made, with cilantro and jalepeño peppers, that he plopped on top. So good!

Work was pretty slow, so I got off early enough to meet Caitlin and her friends for drinks at the Blue Owl. Their cocktails are reported to be some o the best in town, but unfortunately they’re pretty pricey. Lucky for us, Wednesday nights they are 1/2 price! I decided to get the Ellison Cocktail.

This was so delicious! It was cool and refreshing, and totally different from anything I’ve had before.

After we left the bar, I met up with Ari and we took the subway home together. We were both snacky, so we split this TJ’s boysenberry dried fruit bar.

Yesterday was one of those days when I felt like I barely took a breath to stop eating. I think my choices were pretty healthy (except all of the undocumented noshing at work… whoops), and if I’m hungry, it means my body needs the fuel. The only problem is when I find myself eating out of boredom, which happens at the restaurant when we don’t have many customers. Oh well! Life is meant to be delicious.

I’m off to get ready for my 4.5 mile run… I’m still pretty stiff from yoga yesterday, but hopefully it will feel good!

A couple days ago I ordered my first Road ID. Caitlin and Kelly have both been posting a lot about outdoor exercise safety, and although I use a shoe wallet (which is great for holding keys and cash), I wanted something a little more sturdy. Should you decide to buy your own Road ID, the code ThanksKatherine538792 will take $1 off your total purchase price.

BE SAFE and have a great day!

Because life is short. More on that later

How is your Thursday going so far? Mine is going pretty well, and I am determined to stay positive throughout the day. Yesterday, however, was all over the place, but the morning started perfectly with a freshly made batch of Gena’s raw almond milk. Second time in one week! I’m definitely addicted. We don’t have anything that looks even remotely like a strainer here, so I just left it chunky. It’s a lot more rich, but it’s even more delicious! I think I added a little more agave than last time, and it tastes like a creamy dessert.

The rapidly changing weather has given me the sniffles, so I wanted a comforting bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. But wait! This wasn’t just any bowl of oats.

I cooked equal parts oats and raw almond milk (1/2 cup each), and added a splash of water. I topped the mixture with 1 banana, warmed frozen berries, and a small scoop of almond butter for good measure. It was definitely a decadent breakfast, but it powered me through the morning and into my hour-long yoga practice.

Yoga was excellent. I took a 60-minute Vinyasa Flow class, and although I felt the burn of my run in my legs (and quads, in particular), it was just what I needed. My instructor began the class by asking us to leave behind anything that we’d already done that morning, and ignore thoughts about what we had to do later in the day. Stay in the moment, and allow ourselves to reap the benefits of our practice without invasion from the outside world. I need to remember these words. My mind is always whirling around, thinking about what I have to do or what I could have done better, and I never really let myself relax and accept things as they come. Hopefully, weekly yoga and meditation will help me work on this.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t hang on to that calm yogic feeling long enough. When I got to my locker, I discovered that I had forgotten my work skirt. My alternate pair of pants, which I keep at the restaurant, had been stolen. So, I would either have to get home, pick up my skirt, and get back to work in under two hours; or I would have to go buy a pair of pants. New pants are not, unfortunately, in my budget right now. The gym showers’ hot water wasn’t working, so mine was C-O-L-D. Stay positive.

Ari was in the neighborhood, so I decided to just eat my lunch on-the-go and buy a new pair of pants. I’d made another mack-daddy sandwich:

Ezekiel bread

Mustard

Hummus

Ginger Peanut Tofu Salad

Sprouts

Arugula

Beets

Dulse

I’d packed it with two apples; I ate one before yoga and one as “dessert”.

Even when eaten in a rush, while walking down the street, this was awesome. I’m done with flimsy sandwiches!

As soon as I got to work, I had an Orange Greensicle Greens Plus drink. I got some samples of this at the Summit, but this was my first time trying it. I shook it up in a cocktail shaker with club soda, and the result was a dark green fizzy drink. I really wish I’d been able to take a picture of it because it looked just like something out of Frankenstein’s lab! In terms of taste, it was very sweet and had a distinct “orange creamsicle” flavor, and the “green” taste was not very strong. I drank about half of it down, refilled it with seltzer, and it was perfect.

I also snacked on a blueberry bar… it was good, but a little too sweet and not as good as my beloved fig bars. I didn’t want to get sick of the fig, but I’ve learned my lesson and after I finish up this box I’ll be replenishing my stash with the good stuff.

I got out of work just in time to make it to Stogo before they closed.

Ever since Heather visited this vegan treatery, I’ve been dying to go. I tried to go before work (I didn’t have enough cash), and by the time I got there it was dark outside and the flash didn’t agree with the gelato. The ice creams come in soy, coconut and hemp bases, so most dietary needs and/or restrictions can be adhered to.

Every single flavor, however, looked heavenly, and I tried four before settling on a cup with half coconut banana, half chocolate hazelnut. I’d told myself before going in that I wasn’t going to let myself order chocolate hazelnut… whenever it’s on the menu, I order it! But… it looked good. It was a lot more chocolate-y than I’d expected, but it was delicious. The coconut banana was amazing as well, and took me right back to the homemade banana ice cream I used to order every summer at our favorite diner in Long Island.

Stogo also sells cupcakes from Babycakes, raw chocolate truffles and bars, and decadent ice cream sauces. I can’t wait to go back! However, it’s very pricey (this cup cost me $6.25) and I think it’ll have to be a very special treat.

I ate my ice cream while walking to meet up with Ari and get a ride home. In the car, I ate my dinner: mixed greens with apple, beets, tomatoes, walnuts, goat cheese, pesto, and hidden Italian tuna.

Yep, dessert came after dinner. Sometimes it’s better that way! Live it up and have a great day

I’m sure you know the feeling: you’ve spent hours (or even a few hard-earned minutes) preparing something that you’ve been thinking about for weeks, only to discover that it’s not quite right. Had you splurged for the right spices or the good cheese, it would have been perfect. The perfect ingredients can make or break a dish; a simple slice of avocado – or sprouts, as it was yesterday- can make an ordinary sandwich something really special. This thought came to my mind time and again yesterday with each meal I savored that special something, or pinned down what upgrade would make it better.

Yesterday we woke up and headed to the diner, where Ari treated me to breakfast.

I ordered the parfait again…

Something was off, though. I asked for “more yogurt, less granola,” but the yogurt wasn’t Greek anymore! Very sad. There also wasn’t any mango syrup. I still ate it, but I don’t think I’ll be getting that again

Ari, however, ordered their new peanut butter pancakes, and substituted chocolate chips for bananas. I had a few delicious bites of those… they were even better than they look.

I puttered around the house for a little, killing time before my yoga class. On the way to Vinyasa Flow, I grabbed some carrot juice. For those of you who asked about this stuff: I’m obsessed! I used to drink it a lot when I was younger, and have just now re-addicted myself. It’s delicious: sweet, vegetable-y, and the perfect anytime snack.

Yoga was GREAT. It kicked my booty– I got into Firefly for about .5 seconds before toppling over– but I felt strong and relaxed after it was over.

I’d packed a mondo sandwich: Faux-zekiel with hummus, mustard, arugula beets, sprouts and a Dr. Praeger’s sweet potato pancake.

Sprouts always make a sandwich better. I think it’s the stringy, crunchy texture… so perfect.

I bagged it with an apple and a huge bottle of water…

… and ate it in Union Square Park…

… watching the pigeons.

Then I went back home to get some work done. My stomach was growling all day… I noticed Leslie Tweeted a while ago that she’s hungrier when she practices yoga than when she does a more “traditional” workout. Has anyone else noticed this? What exercise makes you feel the hungriest?

I [temporarily] squashed my hunger with a TJ’s Trek Mix Bar.

Since I had a lot of reading and writing to do, I wanted to make something fast and easy that would still taste delicious. A week or so ago, after admiring Caroline‘s fabulous dinner, she kindly sent me the recipe for the Ginger Peanut Tofu Salad she made. I scanned the ingredients and prep: yep- fast, easy, tasty

Can you believe that in all the years of my vegetarianism (that would be until last night, I had yet to make scrambled or mashed tofu? Bad LVP!

I halved the recipe, then added a bit more soy sauce.

In keeping with my mondo sandwich at lunch, I made a mondo salad for dinner.

I filled the plate with a romaine heart, a huge handful of arugula, baby carrots, an apple…

… and a pickle, for good measure.

I had some Annie’s Lite Gingerly Vinaigrette for dipping…

It really was the perfect dinner. I was a little full afterward, but an hour or so later, my tum was demanding a sweet end. Biscotti to the rescue!

I finished my work at midnight, caught up on Project Runway (which I already ruined for one of you… sorry again!), and got 8 hours of sleep. Not bad!

Ari’s mother brought (upon my request) some old school photos for the room.

I think we would have been friends, don’t you?

Have a great day!
